Vallarta to El Paso

Can't Post | Private Reply
We're thinking about driving from Puerto Vallarta to Denver by way of El Paso in early May. For anyone who has driven this lately:

Where is a good place to stay, about half way between PV and Juarez? Perhaps in Torreon?

Is the new autopista (Mex 40?) from Mazatlan to Durango completed? Is the entire route from Tepic to Juarez essentially all via cuotas now?

Any advice or concerns about this route or staying in Torreon?

Thanks.

YES

YES

There are a number of good hotels in Torreón and Gómez Palacio, but they are very hard to find from where you will exit the autopista. (This is where I live.) You might find it easier to overnight in Durango. Doing so, however, will make the second day's drive to the border very long. You might want to think about making it a three-day trip with the second night in Chihuahua.

We use to drive R/T Albuquerque -Guadalajara and finally settled on a two and a half day drive. We overnighted at the Hampton Inn in Chichuahua and the Best Western in centro Zacatecas. Rolly is absolutely correct about the name brand hotels being quite a distance from the cuota in Torreon or Gomez Palacio.

There is a no-tell Motel on the north side of Torreon that one can access pretty easily off of 40D. Take the exit to go back towards the Periferico. Motel eXXXtasis is close to a Sorianos. Haven't stayed there but have considered it for ease of access when traveling in that area.

One can see it using google maps street scene.

When you exit the toll road, turn right (South). It will be several miles to the motel. Just before the motel area you will pass under this bridge. The Soriana supermarket will be on the left. (Ignore the white arrow; it's from another story.)

One recommendation - either take snacks along or eat big meals in the larger cities where you have more of a selection. Pretty marginal pickings in the towns along the way other than convenience stores.

Also highly recommend crossing at Santa Teresa, New Mexico rather than Juarez/El Paso!
