Brian these are my husband's comments and we live here.

We have not locked our house in 5 years in SMA although we lock the permitter which is chain link fencing. We do have 3 rescued dogs which I believe give us a lot of protection. We now also have neighbourhood watch and those assigned and supporting an area meet to discuss issues and updates. The person ranting the most in SMA does not attend and has not set up a neighbourhood watch.

There are some who rant on a soap box seeking attention and while any crime is horrible, adding a lot of police is not the answer. The issue is the state who have a program akin to "catch and release". In many cases I suspect the criminals are the same. Some caught are from Celaya. And, I truly wonder that those who constantly complain about crime stay here?

Clearly, the mayor has stated crime is his number one priority. he has done a lot with vetting police, raising salaries 30%, security cameras, police on horses, neighbourhood watch, English speaking person available for 066 calls, etc. He has openly stated ranting on social media does not help and actually is a negative to him and the city. He refers to one such person in my discussions with him as "lonely" and stupid". In Mexico if you have an issue you raise it quietly, respectfully and not in public forums. Mexicans are very proud and for a mayor working 12 hour plus days a week bringing more change than we have seen possibly ever constant embellishment vs working behind the scenes with him gains zero.

Meanwhile, lots is being done to create jobs. Many people often state the city is busier, they hear the accents from Guadalajara, DF, Monterrey etc esp on weekends. New convention center is open, twinning with West Palm Beach and Santa Fe, 10 million being spent on canal and this has started, improvements to airport, water and sewers to areas never serviced before; several roads being improved, Conde Nast endorsement whether you agree or not has brought in tens of millions in state and federal funding and tourists, etc etc. All this done in 18 months.

I follow some web boards and I know all over Mexico there is a crime problem and in the areas around Lake Chapala one sees safety precautions including razor wire in much greater evidence than here.

SMA is not perfect but it is not the crime capital some would like you to believe. In 6 years in Mexico thankfully never an issue other than one broken car window in Queretaro and to be honest we have many friends in Mexico and only know of one who unfortunately has had a serious crime issue. Crime needs to be addressed as it does in all of Mexico and the United States ( a country with more people on parole, in prison and on probation that most anywhere in the world).

San Miguel is improving in every way and the future looks great.

And Brian another response of my husband's to another post of yours. Maybe time you visited again.

Brian it could be more people are reporting as they are encouraged to do so; feel someone is listening; in SMA there are English speaking people who will take the report and English speaking people answering calls, etc

In Mexico it is often reported 88% of crimes are not reported and just maybe the "not reported" is dropping in SMA.

Every coin has two sides.

If people are really so alarmed and feeling insecure maybe they should explore their options which includes relocating or rescuing 2 or more good size dogs from the many seeking a home.

Wow the city has just announced receiving 40 million pesos for garbage containers, street lights and park benches. Having been named "best city in the world" by Conde Nast was a brilliant coup. The result is millions of Federal dollars for safety, huge reconstruction of the canal plus water, sewer and road improvements. That is 150 million pesos in two weeks plus this weeks announcement that UNAM, the biggest university in Mexico, is opening a campus in SMA.
