Driving borrowed car into Mexico

Can't Post |
My brother and I are planning a road trip going south from El Paso. We'll be driving a car that's registered in our dad's name. I've seen some places that say you're not allowed to drive a car that's not in your name, but I've also read elsewhere that it is permissible as long as you have a notarized letter from the owner with the duration of the trip, VIN #, etc.

Does anybody have any experience with driving borrowed cars into Mexico that they can share? I don't want to get to the checkpoint and be told to turn around.

Thanks

Eric

The temporary importer (that's you) must have an affidavit from the registered owner (Dad) specifically giving you permission to drive the car and temporarily import it into Mexico. The affidavit should clearly specify the registered owner's name as it appears on the title, your complete name as it appears on your driver's license and passport, the VIN, year, make, model and license plate of the car, and the duration (make it for the full 180 days just to give yourself breathing space) of the trip.
