Where could a person find a source of poppy seeds in bulk? We have a friend in Puerto Vallarta who has a bagel business and needs poppy seeds. If there's somewhere in Guadalajara, we could pck them up, or if in other places, perhaps get them shipped to Vallarta.

I gotta think they'd be available at Mamá Coneja at the Abastos in Guadalajara. They may even ship.

I searched the Mamá Coneja website earlier today (under the heading 'semillas'). No poppy seeds. Poppy seeds are illegal in Mexico.

A follow-up. Poppy seeds were sighted at the Mama Conejo store in Santa Tere in Guadalajara (but not on the website), and at Superama in Guadalajara, labelled as Adormidera.

No, they are not illegal. My wife has found them at both Mamá Conejo and la Gallina Feliz at the Abastos.

I understood from your earlier PM that your friend wanted them in bulk. Did she find them that way?

That would explain the discrepancy – while poppy seeds are illegal to import, they may not be illegal to produce and market in Mexico.

He hasn't bought them yet, he is just looking at options now. Two people, both in Guadalajara, said they had either purchased them or seen them recently for sale.
While he has had people mule them down before, he'd prefer a local source. He does not want anyone to get arrested!
His business is in Puerto Vallarta.

I was hiking the hills last Sunday with a farmer from Zinacantan, Chiapas where many flowers are grown and I asked him if they grew poppies, he told me it was illegal to grow them..So where do they grow them?

Mexico is now in 3rd place for heroin production in the world. They grow the poppies to make it here. (amapola). Tierra Caliente, Guerrero, Durango, Chihuahua you name it, there's 8,000 -10,000 acres of it growing in Mexico. According to this video, they've genetically altered them so the flowers aren't red. Gotta love science.

The poppies are so beautiful. I remember being in the Golden triangle in 1080 and the poppies were everywhere, they were like a beautiful carpet. In Zinacantan people cultivate flowes in green houses and it is probably to cold to get a good crop in the hills. I have not seen when hiking in the hills as I am sure people growing them are pretty protective...

I was in the mercado de abastos this morning and saw two 5lb. containers of imported poppy seeds. The price was 400/Kilo. The name of the stall is Abastos Gourmet and it is located directly behind Doña Chela's menuderia in the main retail bodega.

Thanks. I believe our friend has decided he will just use black sesame seeds on his everything bagels to provide the different color.
