how safe is Morelia right now?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Good day all.....as part of my trip to Guanajuato and San Miguel I thought I would drive down to Morelia and spend two nights there. I was telling a Mexican friend about my plans and he was very concerned that I would go to Morelia right now.....a very dangerous place to travel to. He encourages me to change my plans. I thought I would check here first before I cancel my hotel reservations and get the straight scoop. Any concerns about traveling there right now?
thanks so much.....Dave

Only if you read and listen to the CYA messages from the US State Dept. We have been traveling to Morelia and/or Patzcuaro every year since 2008 when I believe they issued the first warning. Furthermore, we don't just travel the cuotas but have driven most of the backroads in the Lake Patzcuaro area and surrounding areas. Not a single sniff of any kind of incident during any of our travels.

Morelia and Pátzcuaro are reasonably safe. You might want to avoid La Tierra Caliente, which is again experiencing violence, notably around Los Reyes.

http://www.quadratin.com.mx/...bloqueos-carreteros/

This area described involves the toll highway south from Morelia to Lázaro Cárdenas, on the Pacific coast, and the coastal road to Caleta de Campos, as well as the often afflicted Apatzingán.

This has not affected travel between Morelia and Pátzcuaro , which we traveled today in our van, without incident.

I'll take a guess that the autopista is pretty safe as far south as Uruapan.

Thanks to both of your for your insights. My goal is to simply drive south to Morelia from San Miguel de Allende, stay two nights in town, drive back north and catch the 15 back to Guadalajara. I won't go any farther south than Morelia. I do appreciate your responses.....thanks, Dave

Please be alert. There is often substantial spillover of roadblocks and other problems onto the highways of Michoacán. Twenty-two people (two police and 20 civilians) were killed today in attacks and gun battles in several places in the state.

Did you read the articles?

In my post, I suggested that the OP would want to be alert to the ongoing situation in Michoacán, as criminal roadblocks and other criminal activity and problems of the kind in the articles can easily spill over from one part of the state to another.

Don't care to get in verbal jousting here but are you not using the same broad brush as the US State Dept to generalize for the entire State of Michoacan?

No.

Although I no longer live in Morelia, I lived there permanently for six years. For the last two and a half years, I have gone there for business and pleasure as many as six times a year. I have close Mexican friends in both Morelia and many other parts of the state. I read the Morelia Spanish-language newspapers every day. I know and understand what is happening in Morelia and the rest of Michoacán in a way that most Mexconnect posters do not.

I know that you do not know, because you are a visitor to Mexico and see things with foreign eyes that only evaluate what is directly before you, the most superficial. You do not understand the current and on-going situation. Like many foreigners, you deny the truth about the problems that exist in Michoacán. It is considered to be one of the most dangerous states in Mexico.

Please: once again, note that I only suggested that the OP be ALERT to events as reported in the news. Those events have a way--without prior notice--of slopping over into other parts of Michoacán. What happens in Los Reyes today could happen tomorrow in Morelia. What happened on Autopista Siglo XXI yesterday could happen on the Morelia - Guadalajara cuota tomorrow.

I agree that it pays to be aware and alert. The situation in La Tierra Caliente has worsened. I also read, unrelated to the violence described in the news articles above, that there may be a closing of the San Ángel-Tzurumcapio toll station on the autopista from Morelia to Uruapan by ex braceros demanding their back pay.

I don't think Chinagringo falls into that category of poster, but I do know what you mean. Based on the comments of some posters who swing through the Tamaulipas border area, you would think the Zetas were some media creation.

Hi onebusyman,

You ask how safe Morelia is "right now", but refer to a planned trip with hotel reservations, etc.

What does "right now" mean to you?

Asking if a place is safe right now , means nothing. In Mexico you are safe in most place until you are not. It is not a constant war zone so it appears safe and then you drive by as some one decides to shoot at the cop and you are not safe any more.
There are problems in Michoacan right now, so things could get worst or things could be totally fine, no one can tell you the place is safe 100% , you just evaluate the situation and mae your decision.
Chances are that you will be fine but there is no guaranty

According to local new media, there was an attempted attack by unknown persons, using molotov cocktails, Wednesday night at Casino Yak at Plaza Morelia, a well known shopping center in the southeastern part of the city. Fortunately, the attack was not carried out and the criminals fled when the police were called. No injuries reported.

Seems we have had some spill over into Gto. I have read reports that a "leader" of the KT was captured in Celaya yesterday. Not too much information about who the person was but there were reports of murders and kidnapping over the weekend.

Late on Sunday night (28 July) friends were returning from Zihuatanejo to Queretaro. There was news of demonstrations by teachers and closed off roads inside Morelia. They detoured the city to avoid problems.

Here is one detour that proved to be deadly.
