Telmex probably won't like this :)

Can't Post |
I've had a US phone number here in Mexico for a couple months. When anyone calls my number in the states (I have an LA number but it can be in any area code) it rings here and I get caller ID and everything... no one even knows I'm here. I get unlimited calls to and from the states for $39.95 per month. Beats the hell out of those silly call backs services. Interesting this was recently made illegal in Panama but then overturned this week by the Supreme Court there.

I don't work for the company or make any money from mentioning it but in respect to the non-commercial nature of this forum if anyone wants to call me and test it or get more info please email me.

Sorry - it doesn't work for Canadians. :)

Brett

Lot's of requests for more info so here it is:

You need a high speed internet line like Telmex Infinitum (satellite will NOT work and is illegal in Mexico anyway) and a US mailing address and credit card to get setup. Don't worry if you're not a computer person; you do NOT even need a computer to use this!

You'll get a box in the mail that plugs into the high speed internet line. You can then plug in any kind of phone you like. I recommend you get a two-line cordless phone so you can have your local line and US line on one phone.

Anyway the equipment is free and there is no install fee - if you don't like it you can cancel in the first 30 days. If I refer you to them you also get your first month of service free ($39.95).

You DO get free caller ID, call waiting, and even voice mail. You can pick virtually any area code you like for your number. As I mentioned before the unlimited calling is to and from the US (Canada is about $.05 per min) and they won't sell you the service unless you have a US address and credit card.

CaboBrett@hotmail.com for more questions or to get a sign up referral but please dont ask for one if you don't have a high speed connection yet!

Great question! I had thought that the latency (delay) of wireles might be a problem but tested it the other day and it was perfect. You need a good 100k for a perfect call. How fast is your connection?

CaboBrett,

Wow! Thanks for the info. Do you suppose I could get my work number to ring down here? Also, I'm not clear on this. You DON'T pay for long distance calls to the U.S.? I like this already.

Nope - $39.95 unlimited to and from the United States. The rest of the world is by the minute but very cheap. Are you in Mexico or the US? Would you like to hear it in action?

CaboBrett,

I live in Mexico and work in San Diego. On days I work at home, this would be wonderful, because during ad campaigns and often when I'm dealing with Sales Reps I get calls at work that I'm late getting back to. They hate to call a Mexican number.

Marisol.

See if I have this right: If I move to Mexico, and want to call the USA cheap,

I need a hi-speed DSL line in Mexico, a USA phone, a $39.95 service, a Mexican phone, & what else??

Plus, I have to have a US address? That is why I'm moving...........

There are 1-800 numbers that answer in Mexico. I would like to know how much that costs... really!

You misunderstand. You only need a high speed internet line and a US address and credit card to bill it to.

You dont need a USA line - you GET one with unlimited LD!

So, there is no physical phone or phone line needed to the house in the USA.

The address is for billing purposes only. The only connection is at the telephone company here, and when the number is dialed, it is forwarded to my physical phone in Mexico. So, what I pay is $39.95 to a phone company here and a DSL line in Mexico. (I assume that hi-speed & DSL are synonymous). How much does a hi-speed line in Mexico cost per month? I also have to HOPE that it available where I will live.

Is it true there is about a $600 USD deposit to get a phone?

What if there is already a phone line in the house I rent: I will still have to have a hi-speed line installed. This is special cableing, right like fiber-optic?

What is the name of the telephone company in the USA that provides this service? I don't guess it matters what state they are in does it?

Let me recap:

The address in the US is for billing (and one time shipment of the hardware).

You plug a phone into the box they send you and the box plugs into the internet line (aDSL is one kind of internet widely offered by Telmex though your cable TV company or a local wireless provider might be even cheaper). You then have a "US line" that can accept and make US calls. It has a US dialtone. You dial 1-area code-phone number. That's it.

No installation fee. Free equipment. First month free with referral. 30 day money back guarantee. Unlimited calls to all 50 states. $.05 to Cananda and most of Europe. Your incoming number can be pretty much in any city you choose. Callers have no clue you are in Mexico or wherever else you are in the world.

To really boggle your mind you can talk to someone in Mexico on one phone, someone in the US on the other, and be on the internet all at the same time with ONE phone line.

To get the free month you have to be referred - so if you give me the email address you'll sign up with I'll have it send you a referall email with more info. It's that easy.
