Water Safety

Mexico is a large country where you'll find water systems that supply water that is both potable and not potable. The only real way to know what is in the water is to have it tested. After it is tested, then you'll know what has to be done to make it potable or treated for whatever reason you desire. The same goes for water in the USA. In the past 20 years, there have been cases in the USA, of gasoline leaking into the water table and contaminating wells. It happened with varying degrees of contamination including some where people complained that their water smelled like gasoline. You have to also remember that water needs to be tested on a regular basis to insure that it continues to be safe. There are problems with organic and inorganic matter. Depending on your situation, you'll want to test for both. As far as Brita water purifiers go, they were designed for treated water systems and do not claim to alleviate such things as coliform or E-coliform. I might add that they are probably sold in Mexico already because one of their main distribution points is Walmart.

: I am doing a project on water purification. Is it all bad?
::What about filling a five gallon garafon with filtered tap water and adding a capful of Microdyn as per the instructions on the container? Any thoughts about this method of purifying water?

Hi Traci,
In Puerto Vallarta, where I sometimes live, the water is purified at a city purification plant. So, in theory, it is safe to drink the water. The problem, however, is that one often does not know the integrity of the distribution system that brings the water to the house. Clean water leaves the purification plant, but if the pipeline is damaged somewhere along its run, sewage or another foreign material could be introduced into the water supply.
Backflow is another possible source of water contamination. In the US, special anti-backflow devices are usually installed in each home to prevent water from flowing in the wrong direction back into the water system.
Therefore, there is a big market for purified water here. Several times a week a man drives his truck through the neighborhood ringing a bell to signal his presence. Water is supplied in large five gallon plastic bottles as in the US. One can also purchase the water at stores in town, again similar to the US.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Matt
P.S. I also have a house in Guadalajara. In Guadalajara, water is not purified to the same standards as Puerto Vallarta, so people only drink water from bottles (unless they are poor, of course).

: I am doing a project on water purification. Is it all bad?
_____________________________________________________________
If you go to areas like Cancun, where the wells are drilled more deeply into the earth, the tap water did not used to be bad. I'm not sure now.
In Tijuana, the water is dangerous to consume, but many do. The problem is that some of the storage facility are breeding grounds for many diseases such as hepatitis. We purchase our bottled water for consumption and to cook with.
