Alternative to Prodigy Internet in Mexico?

Can't Post |
I am working on moving to Mexico. Is there an alternative ISP, or does Prodigy have a monopoly? I could not find any other. I will need a faster connection than dialup, and I like using pop3 for email, I like accessing usenet without going through the web, I like having full use of either/and an ISDN connection or faster, and I like using a shell account. Those are all things that Prodigy doesn't offer. Or allow, as far as I can figure. When I was down there I tried pinging a few things. You can't.
If someone in Mexico is reading this and knows someone I can call who is in the internet business down there, please email me names and numbers. If they don't speak English no problem, I do speak Spanish.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Alternative to Prodigy Internet in Mexico?

Can't Post |
64k cable costs $371 pesos/month in Morelia. $490 for 128k, and something which is over $100 CDN for 256k. I make extensive, very extensive use of ssh to a Linux server and there is no lag with my 64k connection. They offer POP3 email but I never set it up as I have my own POP3 account. I haven't heard anything about Usenet access. It is fairly reliable, it only goes down for maybe 10-15 minutes/day and once or twice a week for close to an hour. Usually in the evenings. By far, the most annoying thing is that they use NAT translation, which is fine as I wasn't planning on running any servers anyway, but my idle shell sessions time out after only about 2 minutes. Its incredibly annoying. But otherwise the service is OK, aside from the fact twice the speed would be half the price in Canada. But then again, I think Canadians are a bit spoiled broadband wise. Yes, I admit I compare every single peso I spend to how far it would have gone at home. But I find the higher cost is worth it as I depend on reliable internet access.

: I am working on moving to Mexico. Is there an alternative ISP, or does Prodigy have a monopoly? Time out problems

:my idle shell sessions time out after only about 2 minutes.
There is a time of day syncing program (click below) that sends an inquiry to a time service at what ever interval you wish to set. This not only keep your computer clock up to the second, but it also makes your ISP think you are busy (which you are). And its free. I love it.

Lots of alternatives

: Prodigy doesn't have a monopoly as an ISP, there are lots of alternatives. It may depend on where you're going to be living as not all are national. AT&T is fairly good.

Way down there, pacific coast. All I saw down there was Prodigy, but you guys have given me a lot of good advice. So - how about hooking me up with some contact info? That satellite thing sounds interesting, too. Thanks.
