Dia de los Muertos - Good Time to Visit Oaxaca?

Starting plans for our return to Oaxaca since last being there ~25 years ago! Thinking about 10 days around el Dia de los Muertos, a celebration that sounds very special. Are the events that travelers can take part in as wonderful to experience as I might imagine?

But we're wondering if it will be too crowded, busy, loud to most enjoy the city and nearby villages at that time? We're thinking that if we're there 10 days, all of those days likely won't be hectic - even if the few days around Day of the Dead will be.

Would really appreciate advice from those "in the know." Being a popular destination at that time of year, we know we need to make arrangement early.

Thanking you in advance for any suggestions you're willing to share!
