House Project Update for 23 Nov 02

Not much new to report this week. The plaster guys continue to make nice walls and to make big messes on the floor. Iniz continues his work of detailing the showers and installing the door and window frames that Coco is making. Only 3 more doors and 3 more windows to go. Manolo has built 3 of the 4 brick frames for the kitchen cabinets. I am still walking around finding things that need attention.

There is nothing to show that you haven’t already seen (except my new hat), so there is no new page on the website this week.

The cabinet maker begins work next week, so I’ll take some pictures of his work.

Our night watchman (I call him the sleeping guy) has been out sick for the past two nights, so Rubin and Rudolfo (the helper guys) have stayed the night. Neither of these two big strong young guys was willing to stay alone, so they both stayed. That left me shaking my head – grown men afraid of the dark!

Enrique made another run to Juarez on family matters. He bought 12 fancy ceiling fans (3 per house) for the living rooms/kitchens. He paid US$76 each for fans identical to one I bought at Home Depot in LA 4 years ago for $160. That Del Norte store in Juarez has some good bargains.

What a mess they make for us to clean up!

I did a little more inquiring about the reasons Rubin and Rudolfo are afraid to stay at the project alone at night. They both are very afraid of ghosts that may come in the dark to harm them if they are alone. Being with someone or having bright lights will make them safe. We don't have electricity at the project yet, so they are afraid to stay there alone.

I find this interesting because I have encountered it before. Many years ago when I lived in Chicago, I became friends with a group of Gypsies who lived in my neighborhood. They had this same fear of ghosts in the night.
