Driving Jalisco to Guanajuato?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Just looking for some quick tips; my wife and I will be in Guadalajara for business meetings this fall and were considering a drive to San Miguel de Allende and back (basically, flying into Guadalajara, renting a car, driving to San Miguel de Allende for a few days to stay with family, and then driving back for our meetings).

I've traveled through difficult areas before (specifically rural West Africa), but I've never been to Mexico at all. What's the risk and complexity profile of taking the 15D and highway 110 for a couple of Americans with at best workmanlike Spanish language skills?

You may find that taking the bus is a good choice. First class buses here are clean, spacious and surprisingly inexpensive. Since you have family in San Miguel, you may not need a car there.
For 2 people, I would recommend the bus trip.

Great advice, I hadn't considered that. ETN looks like it would make for a comfortable ride.

My husband and I are from Texas, where people are practically married to their cars! And even my husband says the bus is a great way to go.
Buses here go literally everywhere, and once you get to the destination city, cabs are always available and usually super inexpensive.
I think you would enjoy the bus ride.

I've been travelling the area for the past 3 weeks in a small RV. As suggested above, take the bus to San Miguel, where you will get aclimated to Colonial Mexico, and then the bus to Guanajuato. You do not want to drive in Guanajuato. Cabs and busses are very cheap in either city. The only danger I have faced is getting lost, which I seem to do alot, but I am seeing beautiful parts of Mexico that were not in my travel plans.
