there is a storage place west of wallmart and beside the scotia bank machine in san antonio. barra is nowhere near here but is on the coast so ask someone from there. and the rest of your question requires more input from you for a proper answer.

Thank you Don Pedro. I am planning on moving down to your area and wasn't sure the best way to move to Mexico. Sell everything and just rent furnished for awhile to see how I like it? Store some things there? I would like to rent 6 mos to 1 yr in different locations to really see what its like. I am coming down in Oct. with another friend who wants to do the same but it won't be very long stay, only week. Want to rent before I buy anywhere to see how I really like it. Really don't plan on moving back to the states for long time though. Maybe even Beliz.

Got any suggestions on best way to move there. Is it cheaper to store stuff there maybe? My understanding is that one can no longer acquire visas in states must do it there? Cost is 1,400 pesos which is what in US? Would it be a big benefit to do that ahead of time? Luvesun

By looking into the archives here and on Chapala.com you may find a lot of good advice on this subject. Generally, moves are pretty expensive from outside the country into Mexico. Also, if you don't have an FM3 (or its' new equivalent) duties can be imposed at the border. If you're bringing new appliances/electronics, etc., it's usually a good idea to take them out of the original packaging and put them in another box/container. Large, bulky and heavy items like furniture can be bought here (and with the money you save not moving those items here reduce your net cost a lot). OTOH, things like bedding (good quality isn't easy to find), keepsakes and other personal treasures probably should be brought down. In addition to the place mentioned, Strom Moving (just to the west of Ajijic's main business district) offers both moving services from the States and storage when you get here. Just Google them for info & contacts. Buena Suerte.

Thank you that was very helpful o storage, I think I'll just sell it all and do it that way sounds the best. Is there dog grooming anywhere or does one go to Guadalajara? With two small dogs will it be hard to find a furnished place? Coming down in Oct. to check things out. What do people do about Medicare? not take it etc. or what? any info.Is it fact that to apply for FM3 one must now do it down there? can't from up here? I thought I'd start it now if I could. I know you can have dual citizenship status now. Either plan on staying in Mx for yrs or spending some time in Belize. Who knows just gotta have that water. Eventually, one day return to the states maybe. Don't speak an ounce of Spanish but I love it there, the people are great, climate is good and the cost of living is suppose to be do-able

Medicare: Part A is automatic, but you can't use it in Mexico. You must return to the States to receive care under the program.
Part B: You can choose to take it and pay or discontinue it.
However, there are penalties if you wish to re-up later.
It isn't available in Mexico, either.

The good news: There is good medical care in Mexico and it is less costly than in the U.S. You can buy private insurance or pay out of pocket.

Yes, there is a plethora of dogs here and as a result: dog groomers, too.

Yes, there are storage units in the Lake Chapala Area.

Gringal,
Thank you, I know lots and lots of questions which I'm sure you have heard 100's of times. I am so ready to leave the states. Here in Bremerton, WA our annual rainfall is 56" WOW, way too much for me. Getting house ready to list and sell in March. I've heard the medical is really good there and reasonable as well. Don't plan on buying just renting furnished for 6mos. to yr and checking out locations. I've heard Barra de Navidad is also nice. If you hear of any great one bedroom places or two pass it along to me or give me a good site. Are there web sites with listings or is it best to go thru mngt companies to find? Single lady, retired, 2 sm. dogs, maybe just one looking for nice, not too pricey place for long term.

Advice: check on the year around weather in both the beach towns and the Lake Chapala area. The beaches can be hot and humid most of the year.......so if that's your cuppa, go rent for a year. Six months might be enough.
Weather can make all the difference between happiness and misery.
lol.
Another consideration is what activities are available. Some folks like surfing and skin diving while others want a good library or little theater group nearby. Senor Google is your friend here. Most towns have a website detailing available facilities. Some places have rental listings available on the web. Then there are the real estate agencies.

Don & Gringal,
You both have been helpful. I am so looking forward to coming in Oct. checking out your area, meeting locals etc. I guess I am looking to move to an area that has some social life for seniors, sort of quaint, not too remote, medical if needed and reasonable to live. Sound too perfect maybe you have found it. I have heard sooo many great things about this area. I will only be there for one week so I hope I can see enough for a good decision. Is it best to apply for a FM3 visa once there or should I start now. How much is it? How long does it take? I really don't think I would ever tire of the beaches, sort of a sun beach gal but my friend who also wants to move there late next year likes the cooler year around and wants a place she can walk everywhere. Hence, we might live in different areas. Is Belize pretty pricey? seems like it. I am looking forward to meeting lot s of locals while there, hearing their stories and gaining knowledge from their expertise. Stay in touch k

One week is not likely to be enough time to get an FM3. And, you must have a permanent address before you can get an FM3, so that will need to come later.

happy to help k but i will only do it by pm here for you, for obvious reasons. it's pedro by the way. "don" is like mister but a sign of respect that my younger mexican friends use when they address me. just like i am sure rolly is addressed as "don" rolly by his friends in lerdo.
i will say this though;barra is only a 4 1/2 hour drive from here for your beach fix. people actually come here during the hot season from the coast to escape the heat and humidity. lake chapala does have some artificial beaches in the town of chapala.

luvesun,

There is a nifty tool on the forums that will let you get a lot of answers to things that have been discussed before. It is the SEARCH POSTS function (top of each page). Just click on it and put something in the 'Search String' area, like 'Medicare' or 'Barra de Navidad'. Then hit Search. You'll get back pages of 'old' posts that had that string somewhere in them.

Two cautions: look at the date to the far right of the resultant search as you may want to make sure that you are getting more current info. Things can and do change over time. The other caution is 'take things with some grain of salt' as sometimes folks misrepresent (knowingly or not) the facts from time to time.

But it is a good way to come up to speed on some subjects or give you fuel for other questions.

P.S. 'Most' rentals at Lakeside are furnished and 'most' allow pets.

P.P.S. An Opinion.... make sure that 'Mexico is for you and/or You are for Mexico' before you decide to cancel or not take Medicare Part B. No, it is not 'useable' in Mexico and paying for something you won't be able to use while there seems to be foolhardy. BUT, getting back into the program, if you later choose or have to go back north, is a very expensive undertaking. It's not like one can just start it back up after leaving.... there are huge penalties. Be patient is my suggestion. Make sure.

Hi, luvesun, one week is really cutting it thin. At any rate, get yourself comfy and spend some time on rolly's site www.rollybrook.com

Also suggest you order the book he co-authored. This will answer most of your questions and will be handy for looking things up
