we have wild dandelions in the garden that we eat so they do grow in the Chapala area. We have lemon, limon real, mandarine, kafir lime trees, limes sweet and bitter oranges, avocados, ginger, lemon grass , madagascar or whatever cherries and all types of herbs.

Wow! If there were a "jawdropping" smiley face for this forum I would be using it here!! :) ]. I am drooling over here. Is ginger hard to grow? Its a root plant, could you guestimate how much growing space it needs?

I would love to grow ginger, it is probably the herb/root I buy the most at the mercado. I have even converted my mother in law to cooking with it often and adding it to her rice recipe! My brother and his wife regularly bless their midwest lawn for the abundance of dandelions for their salads. They dont spray to kill them and their neighbors are far enough that they dont have to worry about eating herbicide sprayed dandelions.

Do you happen to grow eneldo in your list of herbs? I am about to plant some from seed and was wondering how it will do !

ginger grows very tall and had white flowers which have a wonderful smell. Unless you have a big barrel so the flowers can propagate quite a bit you probably would eat the rhizone too fast. The ginger I have is used to hide a gas tank, as well as for food. The ginger I have seen is usually at 5000 and below altitude, do not know how it would do in Mexico.
I have not tried dill as I do not use it. I would love to have big bulb fennel but I have not tried that either.. I would think you could grow eneldo in Mexico , I see it in some gardens in San Cristobal de las Casas and it is at around the same altitude. You guys have a drier climate but you can water so if you like it you probably could grow it.

Thank you for the tips! I will go ahead and try the eneldo, if it grows it grows, if not well... Thats life!

I dont think we have a container big enough for the ginger, but I will keep an eye out for anyone getting rid of something that size just in case. You never know! But you may be right about the altitude here, I dont have any experience growing ginger so I will yeild to your personal experince ;)

I've tried your 3 girlys site a number of times but he graphics are so large they don't load. Think about reducing the size or loose visits. Anything over 100k is way too much. I do have a cel connection but other sites no problem

Thanks for the heads up. The current blog header is too large, and I have been fighting with my iPad to resize it... And dont have access to a desktop or even laptop to fix it from there.

I will see if I can have someone else gpfix it for me, because the gigantic header does look kinda awkward. I do also post alot of pics, but I bet its the header that is the issue.

The gardener explained that there are tall and short banana trees, we got the short ones. They don't exceed 8 ft. The fruit is small but plentiful.

I'm enjoying this thread [so far] but have one pet peeve: bananas grow on plants, not trees... [and yes, there is a difference, trees are a subset of plants]

Nothing wrong with a little shade if you have the room! Are they arleady producing, or does it take awhile to produce fruit like some large plants ?

<PS tried to resize the header on the blog, it is smaller now... Hopefully small enough to load easier. I need to search for another app to make photo collages on the iPad... The one I have now kinda sucks!>

Mmm figs! I bet you have googled your heart out searching for recipes to use those up. Do you like to can? Or do figs not can welll? (i have no clue personally!)
I come from an ethnic culture that canned, jammed, and preserved its heart out—at least the women did. My mother spent her summers putting down all the produce of our bountiful garden away for the winter.

And that was enough for me. I don't feel any desire to do the same. So I'll be eating what figs I can, and the dogs can enjoy the rest. If I were a preserver, I'd probably make jam and/or can them.

I love tamales de platano! Or made with banana leaves. Smene told me they are popular along the coast, Veracruz etc?

I had them first in the States at a birthday party, and have has them a couple times here in D.F. My inlaws and husband prefer the corn husks but i like the different texture that the banana leaves gives!

We have a couple of the small banana plants in our jardin but only 2 plants have had fruit and then died off in the 2 yrs we've been here. I fertilized them & talked to them but now all I have are beautiful plants with huge leaves....no fruit in at least a year. Is this normal? What can I do differently? I'm sure they had not ever been fertilized before we got here.
Thx for any tips.

Banana plants die after they fruit, it is totally normal, usually another or several other plants come out so you just cut the plant that is dyeing and go on to the next one. Sa,e with

The people in Oaxaca use banana leaves for their tamales as well as the corn husk and so do they in Chiapas.

Tamales here in Yucatan are all made with banana leaves, I think they are more commonly used for cooking in the tropics everywhere. There is one guy here in Merida that makes what are called Mexican tamales and he sells them in the evenings from the street near one of the glorietas. There is always a line of cars waiting to buy them. I go occasionally because it is nice to have something different. I just wish someone sold corundas from Michoacan around here, they are my favorite tamales.
