Importing cats into the US

Can't Post | Private Reply
My wife and son will be travelling to the US next month on Delta Airlines from Guadalajara, and I'm hoping they can take two cats with them as carry-on baggage under the front seat. If the information I found below is correct, Mexican authorities and airline personnel will no longer object to taking pets aboard. But can anyone tell me what documents I'll need? They'll be flying to San Antonio. Do I need a health certificate dated no later than 5 days before the flight? Do they need proof of vaccinations? Help appreciated.

July 3, 2012 Update – United is Now Flying Pets – United Airlines has indeed re-implemented their pets in cabin policy as of today. I called to confirm, and the cost is $125 USD each way.
I want to personally thank each and every one of you who called and emailed your complaints and concerns about the policy change. In basically one month, not only did the Mexican government revise their pet policy, but all the airlines re-implemented their policies to allow pets to fly in the cabin to/from Mexico as well.

Here is an official site giving information, and here is another. There is also plenty of information on non-official sites that can be found with a search like [bringing pets to the US].

Hi Maesonna - thank you for the links. I did check all the official sites and even Delta Airlines, but what I was hoping for was information from someone who recently transported a pet from Guadalajara airport to the US and what actually happens at the check-in desk etc. I could go to the airport to get that information from the horse's mouth, but I wouldn't have a ticket, so I guess they wouldn't let me talk to Delta folks.

I think you could just walk up to the Delta ticket counter and talk to anybody. Why would you be prevented from doing that?

We purchased a cat from the PV Rescue for Mother's 80th, she was here on vacation. She was able to take the cat back on Delta from PV to Tampa no poblem, except the cost $200 (per pet). We also spent $70 to update all vaccinations and to have the Vet Certificate which is required. she used a wheel chair assist and so had an attnedant to help her get through security and to the plane. Her first pet in 35 years and she is thrilled.

Importing cats into the US - update

Yesterday I found out from the horse's mouth - a Delta representative at the Guadalajara airport - that pets are allowed as carry-on baggage for a fee. All you need is a health certificate. But there is still an embargo on shipping pets as checked baggage.

Hunter... not what you meant, but I had an image of the kitty in a wheelchair.
