Turning in Temporary Vehicle Permit

Can't Post | Private Reply
At this point I won't try to explain why I was doing this, but.....

Crossed out of Mexico last Thursday and did not have the original paperwork for the car permit. It had been lost but I did have a good color copy of it.

As I drove up I handed it to the lady, she took one look at it and said, "original"; I explained that it had been lost and could she not just use this 'exact copy'. She basically said, 'no I can't'. I asked 'what can I do' and she started speaking very fast and I don't understand 'fast Spanish'. I think I got the drift that there was something that I must do and it would take someone 'higher' than her, and time.

I left without doing anything about the permit as it is now the problem of the original owner. I tried to tell him that I needed the original permit. The good news is that he is leaving Mexico 'never to return'.

Fun story. Thanks for the point about keeping/getting the original Temporary Import Permit.

"Fast-Spanish", mumbled-Spanish, street-Spanish, or mangled-Spanish get me every time.
In Yucatan, we have many Maya speakers from the pueblitos who don't learn Spanish until age 15 - 20 years of age - so they are often the masters of street-Spanish, or mangled/mumbled-Spanish.

So the original owner lost the deposit?

"So the original owner lost the deposit?"

No, the car was imported in 2007 when there was no such thing as a deposit. The only thing lost at the moment is his right to bring another car back into Mexico. We will pursue what the remedy is for 'losing' your permit but at the moment the owner is not concerned.

We went to the Mexico-Belize border just 2 weeks ago to take care of the lost paper permit. One difference in the outcome: The owner of the vehicle wanted to keep the vehicle in Mexico. The short version of How To do this is: Write a formal letter to Aduana, explaining that you want to cancel your vehicle's current temporary import permit. Include your passport number, your INM permit's number, the VIN of the vehicle, registration papers for the vehicle, vehicle description (Make, model, and year), copies of passport, etc, and the ID number off the windshield sticker. Take the letter to a border Aduana office.

At the border, first, we had the Banjercito office pull up a copy of his TIP permit records on their computer, using his passport number. Banjercito then printed us a single page with all of the pertinent TIP and vehicle information, which they told us to take to an Aduana manager, upstairs. A Banjercito agent removed the sticker. Note: We had copies of his passport, driver's license, and vehicle information etc to give them with the "request to cancel" letter.

It took about a 45 minutes to cancel his permit at an Aduana office at the border. We had to work with an Aduana manager and a Banjercito supervisor to do this, since the Aduana clerks at the front desks and at the checkpoint were not authorized to do this.

Thanks for the information. My case is a bit different as the original car TIP was issued in 2003 and I have a fotocopy of the paperwork so maybe it will be easier than all that…… (A guy can dream can’t he?)
-not that your process makes it sound too hard, just not something I want to do after driving 11 hours.

On the bright side there is no deposit to loose….. and I do not want to keep the car in Mexcio….so there is no new TIP to issue….

Hmmm, wondering if the TIP is tied to the passport what happens when you get a new passport (renewal) can you get a new TIP if you still have an old one on the books?

If you are not keeping the car in Mexico, then why not follow the agreement you signed, take the car to the border and kill the metaphorical birds: Apply to cancel the permit, and leave the car in a different country?

Yes that is my intention, take the car out and cancel the permit. (That is why I asked the question in the first place, to best prepare and have any required docs that I have access to available.) However if there is too much red tape and hoop jumping involved due to only having a photocopy and not having the original paperwork, I will be very tempted to say “como sea” and take the care out without the hoop jumping.
Glad to hear your experience on the southern border was a pleasant one, hopefully mine on the northern border will be as well.

Cool.

The text of the permit cancellation letter was straightforward. Stated his name, passport number & country, TIP ID, VIN number, etc, and explained that he wanted to cancel said TIP. Explained he had lost the original paper part of the permit. Stated that sticker was still on the car and that the associated INM permits were kept continuously current during the entire period. Added the bit that everything stated above is true and correct.

Hope you have a safe trip.

cool.

I wonder if I am supposed to use the passport that I had at the time the TIP was issued or my current passport. I guess I could do 3 letters to cover all bases. (one letter with the old passport information, one letter with the new passport information and one letter with both old and new passport information)

Also wondering if I will need the title and title information, and if so should I use the title from when the TIP was issued or information from the current title............. I guess I could do 9 letters to cover all my bases.....

Funny!

I suspect you are right. It is unlikely that anyone on Mexconnect has actually turned in a permit with your precise situation, so, the best we can do is to think like an Aduana agent. One option you described makes good sense: A single letter listing your previous passport number used for the original TIP, your current passport #, and an explanation that you have replaced your passport should work. Do you have your cancelled passport? Taking that (+ a copy) and your current passport (+ a copy) would seal the deal. (?) There was no requirement for the title by either Aduana or Banjercito for my friend.
