What is the status of getting hybrids in Guad/Ajijic? The way I picture our life in Ajijic, when we do use a car, it will be around town mostly, [and high speed driving a la the Interstate system is not as prevalent] since the intercity bus system is so good, it should not be like living in the USA. Ford makes their Focus Hybrid in Guad, are they, or other hybrids for sale?

FM3 Processing to Buy a Car

Can't Post | Private Reply
This is a question for those in Ajijic/Chapala:

I will be down there from 8/11 thru 8/29, roughly 18 days. Obviously I will have an FMM. I also have a signed lease for a house for the month of August and then again for a year beginning February 2013. Should I apply for my FM3 (whatever) on this trip or wait till we finally move there in February? Will there be enough time in August to have it processed? I believe I have to surrender my FMM while the process is ongoing.

The reason I ask is that when we arrive in February, the first thing after settling in will be to get a car and for that I need: proof of residence, and an FM3 (whatever) and if that process takes a month, we'd be without wheels for a long (-ish) time when we need transportation to set up our house.

Opinions, por favor?

Two weeks is not a whole lot of times unless you get in touch with someone like Intercasa and can have everything ready the day you come in. I did one in two weeks but I also did one in more than a month, you can neveer tell so personaly I would not go through the stress in 2 weeks, I would do it in February and rent a car or a driver a few days a week to get more things done.

You do not need an FM3 to buy a Mexican plated car.

I've heard 2 to 3 weeks on new FM3's (a week for renewals). However, you will need a phone bill or electric bill in your name when applying. A lease (even a deed to a house) won't help; INM wants the utility bill. Of course, bank statements, etc. are also needed.

We do not have any utility bills in our name and we received our new FM3's about 1 1/2 months ago. We supplied our lease agreement and copies of the owners utility bills to prove address. The whole process from start to finish took 2 weeks. No problems at all. We did this through Chapala Law (Spencer).

Just wait til February. As mentioned above, you don't need an FM3 to buy a car here.

My arithmetic skills were fair to begin with and have gotten worse. The current price of gas from Pemex is $10.36 MXN/litre. What is that is USD/gallon?

$ 3.02 US a gallon. Still cheaper than the US. And much, much cheaper than Canada.

Thanks - I did the math myself, came up with a number like that and couldn't believe it. Current price in Baltimore for regular is $3.46/US Gal. Another nice reason to move.

I wouldn't depend on gas in Mexico being much cheaper than the U.S. for the duration. The price is set by the government and increases every month by a few centavos. By law.

And the current price in U.S. dollars is, of course, dependent on the monetary exchange rate currently sitting around 13.5. It's been there, mas o menos, since 2009 but one can never tell.

As interesting and elucidating this gas price info is, isn't it sort of moot? I mean you need the car, you've got one gas outlet - it's sort of like the weather: we can talk about it, but can't do much about it, unless your on the Texas border. Thanks for the info. :)

perfect mindset FHBOY!
you'll go far here. i could care less what my fill up costs anymore never mind comparing to NOB. I drive here and so will you.i use magna in the truck at $200pesos times 2 tanks and fill er up in the moto with premium. the moto is what i check because of the new engine work and i now get about 60 miles on a 3 1/2 gallon tank with a larger main jet even, and before the work i got about 35 miles. life is good.

Hello FHBOY,

You are certainly entitled to your interests on these forums, as am I, and many others. Some of us are still not afraid to drive NOB to conduct our personal business and visit friends NOB. I do happen to agree with the philosophy that like the weather and taxes, we do not have much of a choice, but when it comes to managing my personal finances, I prefer using what is best for me and not others. I glean some of my decisions from information that appear on many different helpful sources, including MexConnect. I'm sorry if 100% of every post here on MexConnect doesn’t suit your personal needs. I guess the old adage would hold true here. Take what you will, and leave the rest.

Regards,

robt65

Hey Robt65, Cool it, OK? I was not criticizing the info, I am not looking for confrontation. I do not know why you inferred that. My follow up comment was semi tongue in cheek, not everything in life is totally serious, OK? The remark was not meant personally for anyone.

You want to manage your stuff one way, hey it's no skin off my back and I really do not care. If it works for you, fine. What I care about is civility, what I am looking for is maturity. What I am not looking for is sarcasm. BTW-I am not asking that you agree with me, but am only asking that we argue as gentlemen. Is that fair?

So yeah, I'll read what I want, and if I find this place too unfriendly, then I will leave it.

Robt65 - we got off to a bad start - but it doesn't have to continue that way. Let's try it and see.
