We are planning on a quick trip up to this little lake to just "poke" around. We understand there are some good artisans there.
Does anyone have any experiences they would be willing to share....what to look for, what to expect, places to eat?

Yes, I had done the search of Mexconnect but did not know of the other link. Thanks so much! I was just wondering if anyone had any more recent experiences up there? Sr. Navarro Ibarra is on our list to seek out.

Sr Martin Ibarra is just accross from the church in San Juan Evangelista. if you are on the street where the church is, he is onthe right and the church is on the left. I looked for him years ago in the house in the church yard but he is on the street.
There are lots of artisans in the village and lots of stone carver in the next village. Lots of good molcajetes and metates as well as statues. To go there take the relatively new road off the Chapala road at the Burritos restaurant. The road is the sam one wher they find all kinds of body parts in plastic bags...
Both villages have very old and interesting churches. By the way Martin Ibarra has a brother who is a museum curator in Guadalajara and he told me that the area used to be a Purepecha outpost and this is why they have a lot of the same customs and altars are the ones you see in Michoacan. Interesting area. Chapala and Ajijic were Nahuatl speaking but the villages there spoke Purepecha.

So you mean that if we see plastic bags along the road, we should not pick up the "trash"?!? Don't worry about that!!!

That is right, if you see some large trash bags keep going...
By the way Martin is very entertaining and independent. Sometimes he does not have much done during the rainy season as the clay does not dry very quicklyt. He is kind of a big kid and loves to play with the little whistles he makes , I think they are called ukelele, they are little birds he fills with water and blows in them to make them soun like birds. He loves those little things. Beside his famous virgins, he does great lamps and many replicas of objects found in digs. He is a fascinating man and I love to watch him work and talk to him.
Enjoy your visit.
Make sure to go and see the stone carvers too ,some of them are very entertaining as well and make some very attractive and useful things.
If you go around the like you will also run into a neat nursery that sells water plants,

If you go on a Sunday you are in for a treat... the best grilled quail in the world! Park when the road into Cajititlan gets really congested and continue on foot towards the malecon. On your right you will see a delightful family grilling the quail literally in their doorway. Pick up a few and head on down to the malecon where, for the price of a soda or a beer, you can enjoy a table and a real Sunday village scene.
On your way into town, check out Antonio's molcajetes. He is quite an artist too and his open-air place will be on your right.
