Auto windshield stickers

Can't Post | Private Reply
For the past 5 weeks we have had a rental car for our stay in Puerto Vallarta. So far I have been stopped 5 times by the Transito cops, for allegedly speeding, jumping a light, too fast over the topes, all a load of bs except for one minor speeding infraction. All have occurred on the Mex200 the main drag by the airport. I am convinced that the car has been targeted as a rental . There are no National Car rental car bumper stickers, but there is a sticker about 3 inches square in the colors of the Mexican flag with the large letters JLAJATO underneath on the front and rear windshields. This is visible from a following vehicle. Could anyone explain what this might be?

I don't know anything about rental cars, but maybe you should get them to give you the ticket, assuming you are just visiting. Good luck.

You are correct, however I really do not trust the Transito cops to take care of my drivers license (we have to hand it over and get it back when the fine is paid). In PV there are also banditos dressed up as cops, which complicates matters further.

If you demand to pay the " fine " at the police station they will usually let you off with a warning...

We´re from Vallarta too and I feel your pain. It´s no fun, but here´s my advice to avoid getting stopped and what to do if you get stopped.

With respect to your specific question, I always keep a look-out to see the license plates of those who have been stopped by Transito and I see no evidence that they single out rentals or foreign-plated cars. You just need a strategy, whatever your plates.

On Highway 200, near the airport, always drive at least 3 km below the speed limit. I believe it is 60, so go 57. Check for the sign, but I think that´s right. Even though other cars whiz past, don´t you. Drive like an old lady. Let them catch someone else. Be careful of sudden speed limit changes such as just after you cross the bridge from Nayarit (There is a Plaza called Plaza Canalán). Suddenly the speed limit changes to 30 km/hr. There is a school there so I think someone was killed. This sign is not obvious. I know about it and always slow down even though others whiz by. There are other sudden changes such as on Fluvial Road near Costco (40 instead of 50.

Be careful also of sudden changing lights and giant intersectionsi. Try to stop if you can. Again, they aren´t terribly tolerant about people going through on orange lights even though, many times, it´s almost impossible not to.

Crawl over speed bumps.

If you are stopped, be very polite and smile. If you can, speak Spanish. If you are sure you haven´t done anything wrong, politely insist. I usually say I never speed and wouldn´t think of breaking any laws (as I smile). Never get mad or insist on your rights. Occasionally a cop will be a jerk, but don´t rise to the bait. My husband, in April, went through on an orange light just north of Plaza Marina. He got stopped and the cop kept saying "Mentiras, muchas mentiras" with big grandiose threatening gestures. My husband just said "No mentiras" (No lies). He let us go. No ticket.

If they want to give you a ticket, take it. Give them your licence and they will give you a receipt. Everybody in Vallarta does that. We have been to Las Juntas twice. It´s close to Home Depot. The fine is half what is printed on the ticket (always), the procedure is fast, you get your licence back and are on your way.

I can´t stress enough that in Puerto Vallarta at least you can´t go with the speed of traffic or even 3 km over the speed limit. Not like in my part of Canada, Ontario, where everybody, cops included, go 10 km over the limit in urban areas and 20 on Higihway. In Vallarta. always go a bit below. It works. It really does.

Hope this helps.

In addition to Careyeroslib's good advice,
Call their bluff, raise as needed, be ready to calmly and confidently re-raise:

“Dame mi multa, por favor.
“ **

Take their picture.

"Me gustaria hablar con tu jefe, por favor."
"I want to talk with your Captain/manager, please."

Then, if needed, the Third Raise:
"Por favor, lleveme a la estación de Policia."
"Please take me to the station."

We have an article at Surviving Yucatan describing how to gently defuse traffic stops, with polite incremental approaches that allow each party to walk away contented at: http://yucalandia.wordpress.com/...-mi-multa-por-favor/

These approaches have worked for us for 26 years of stress-free traffic stops and retens.

**If you demand that the officer to give you a "boleto", it shows them that you really don't quite know how things work, (by using the wrong word in the wrong way). Instead, show some polish and confidence, and things go much more smoothly.

A language question - isn't "folio" the word for a ticket? Multa being "fine".

After 6 winters in Vallarta, I have tried several techniques for handling tickets. This is what works for me.

1. I quit speeding as much as I can. I just quit being in a hurry.

2. I don't hand them my license. That gives them control. I have never encountered a Transito whose English was worse than my Spanish so I ask them if they are going to give me a ticket? I say this is ok, I live here and know where to go in Las Juntas. It seems that they do not really want to write a ticket.

3. If they are using the big radar sign and are just pointing at people to pull over, just wave and continue on.

Again today, we were passed by Transito going flat out. 300 meters ahead going north on Mex200 just outside the Federal Police station on the Jalisco/ Nayarit border they stopped letting 20 plus cars zoom by and pulled us over and accused us of going 40 in a 30 k zone . Bull. We were polite but when it became obvious that no bribe was going to be paid, they waved us on. As we were right outside the Federalies base we went inside and an officer came out and explained that the Mexican flag sign with the large letters below signified a rental car. So we have taped over the signs so now they cannot see them. Maybe now we can go to town and not be hassled . I will be speaking to National Car Rental and suggest if they need to have this sticker that it is placed on a side window. Other countries can mange without identifying a rental car, so why not Mexico?

This is one of those situations where you can choose to speak "The Queen's English" with a stiff upper lip, or you can speak Mexican Spanish as is commonly used by Mexicans and other Americans.

You are technically correct. Do you pronounce your d's as a the lisped "th"? Do you use "vosotros"? Do you pronounce your Z's like Zebra or do you use the S sound? How about B's and V's - do you choose the American convention(s) or do you speak like a Spaniard. Spanish spoken in the Americas by Americans really is different than proper Spanish from the Iberian Peninsula.

It seems better to use common language here when interacting with police officers who likely have very little education, especially since our intent is to show in a subtle way that you are not some gringo who just came here ~ a sheep ready to be shorn by eager policia.

We recently rented a car in the south of France and drove many kilometers every day. In the rear window, the car had a huge advertising sticker that identified it as a rental car. We had no problems with police.

The OP has figured out a "work around," good!

I like Yuca's way of explaining things. I agree, "multa", will be understood by all Transitos. I have not heard "folio" used...ever...although it may be correct Spanish. Mi español es muy callejero.

"Infraccion" is another common term used for traffic tickets. "Levantame la infraccion" is a solid & colloquial way of saying "give me the ticket."

On a few occasions, I have been told, "No quiero abrir un folio, señora." It was the tránsito's hint that he would prefer me to pay a bribe. On no occasion did I pay a bribe, and on no occasion did he open a folio.

Another vocabulary question…

Do people call it “la estación de policia” where you are?

I would have thought “ministerio público”.
Except here in DF, where one might also say “la delegación” (the MP offices are at the delegación.)

Ministerio Publico is the investigative arm of the police. The local police station is something different and is in the Delegation office in my location - Ministerio Publico having it's own office elsewhere.

In La Paz, Baja California Sur, our traffic police station is called Seguridad y Tránsito Municipal, and everybody just calls it el tránsito. Traffic police officers are also tránsitos. Our ministerio público (where one goes to file crime reports and the like), is in a different location. We also have federal and state police. I don't recall ever hearing anyone say "estación de policia" for any police station. People would ask, "Which one?"

When we violate a traffic law, it's an infracción. We pay the multa at windows at el tránsito labeled "infracciónes". Often people will say (e.g.) "Tengo que pagar mis infracciónes."

Another thing to be aware of, if you aren't already, is that in most of México there are no amber lights on signal lights. Instead, the lights will begin flashing, red lights will begin flashing to indicate that they are about to turn green, and vice versa. Treat a flashing signal light as you would an amber light in other places.

A word of caution is that when entering an intersection after a light changes, be very cautious, as there will usually be one or several cars that will try to squeeze through after a light changes. The general attitude here seems to be to ignore all laws, and there are no enforced rules of the road here. The cops will not do anything unless they can get paid extra for it.

Really? We have amber lights in all the signals, and at times that's the only bulb that works here at lakeside. As for ignoring the laws, it's not that so much as the native folks just consider them as "suggested guidelines".

I see it almost the same as Steve does, but what I have experienced most is that when the light is out, it is either yellow or green but I almost never have seen a red light out.

There's a reason for the red not being out as often, they usually swap the one out of the green socket, but at least for a time recently the E light in San Antonio had the green out going one way and the red the other? - now, how am I supposed to remember which is which? I also saw them commander a big Coke truck one day on the Carretera at Corona and climb up on top of it to change the bulb. Life in MX is not for the faint or heart or the humorless.
