Seven injured in latest Nuevo Laredo car bombing

The US news media covered yesterday's tragedy in Nuevo Laredo and initially it seemed to me like just one more regrettable instance of similar events in the border city. Then I saw the pictures...do expats still expound the supposedly common wisdom that only those involved with the drug war are likely to suffer violence? What did that man and poor abuelitas do other than go about their daily business downtown? Americans are rightfully concerned about Syria but should pay more attention to what is happening to its closest neighbor.

I'm guessing you never lived in N.L.

Seriously. Do not expound about issues regarding areas you have never lived in.

It is rude.
Lived for 35 months in Mexico. I feel like I paid my dues...

My introduction to violence at the border was living six years (1996-2002) in Tijuana during the struggle between the Arellano-Felix and Sinaloa cartels. It was a precursor to what would happen to the rest of the Republic in ensuing years. When I moved to San Miguel de Allende, none of my Mexican or expat contacts were even familiar with the street meaning of the word "levanton". My remark was inspired by the line delivered by Benito Del Toro's character in the movie Traffic: "I think the United States needs to pay attention to Tijuana now!"
