places to camp from nogales to pv

Can't Post |
we will be entering mexico at nogales and will be driving to pv along the coast from there. we should arrive there at the end of december/beginning of january. there will be 4 of us and 2 dogs... does anyone have any ideas where we can camp safely and somewhat comfortably? we are very humble people who will just need a place to set out a few tents and spend the night without trouble. any info would be appreciated. thanks so much, once again!

Hi again, Alicia

I don't have any exact information about camping along the route you are talking about, but I don't think you will go too far wrong if you do something like this: Don't wait until the last moment before you need a place to camp. Talk to some local people--there are all kinds of ways to do this, like having a soda at a little store in a small town, or a cup of coffee in a small town restaurant. Pick out somebody who seems friendly, like the owner, or someone else having a coke or coffee; or stop at a ranchito where you see someone working. Or find someone near where you want to camp who has a tool in his or her hand and talk to that person. Do some of that normal stroking you do in conversation: talk about the weather or the food or the road or how pretty the area is, and this will lead to other stuff, and then you ask "No hay por aqui un lugar bonito donde pondemos acampar?" Expect to pay a little something: "Podemos cooperar con algo." Most people in small towns will know of situations that will work if you are willing to pay the landowner a little something. They may even know where you can camp for free.

You can't go wrong if you invest in a copy if the 'Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping' by Terri and Mike Church. Also check their web-site www.rollinghomespress.com to see recent updates.

At Nogales there is an RV park where you could tent...for about $10-15 American.

Further south across the border, you will find RV campground located in or around most of the bigger cities. However in our experience, these campgrounds are somewhat lacking...so we use many of the suggestions that Keith made to you.

But if you are a rooky at camping in Mexico or speaking Spanish then I advise getting your feet wet first in the campgrounds. Ten years of camping around Mexico has taught me that there's always something to learn and...to expect the 'unexpected'. Sincerely Wendy
