A New Hotel I Tried in Matehuala, S. L. P.

I came up to McAllen, TX., from San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, on Saturday for another VA Hospital Stay. I left at 11:30 AM and arrived in at 4:30 PM in Matehuala. Again, it was an uneventful trip, all went well.
I had another great dinner at the La Noria Restaurant and stayed at a different hotel this time a little south of town, south of the arch.
Really this new hotel (to me) is now my favorite. It is called the “Hotel Villa Don Juan” It is a very bright yellow color on the right hand side of the road. There is a Pemex about 6 doors down the road from the hotel on your way south out of town. It is very clean and I would rate it a good three stars. Television, no cable or control, which seems to be the norm in the less expensive hotels, but then again, I went to sleep and not to watch television.
For a single room the price was $300 MX Pesos, for 2 persons it is $400 MX Pesos, for three to five persons, $500 MX Pesos. The showers are great and you can park right outside your room. Each room is also air conditioned and they really work. Again, for my money, it sure beats $1,000 MX Pesos to $1,200 MX Pesos for a room at the Las Palmas Hotel, when all I am seeing is the inside of my eyes! (smiling)

The Fellow who is managing the place also speaks a good amount of English as he worked in Houston for several years. I will definitely be using this place from now on. The showers are really great with excellent water pressure and really hot water. The rooms are very clean and you really do not hear the highway noise. There is a 24 hour desk person who is also the security.
All in all, a very peaceful, restful nights lodging for an economic price. Give it a try, you might like it too.

Hey Robert: Thanks for the tip.

We are actually looking for just what you suggested. Where we stayed last time (where we tried the wonderful La Noria) wasn´t quite good enough for what we need on a longer road trip. Where we stayed was called Casa Real, I think, across from Walmart. About the same price. I hope you don´t mind my just saying a quick word about the good and not-so-good about Casa Real for people looking for accommodation in this town.

Good: Price, nice spacious rooms (for 450 pesos we got two rooms separated by an archway. Two rooms meant two bathrooms, two tvs. Would be nice for a family because there could be some privacy. Breakfast was also included). Very nice people. Car at the door. Secure feeling. Breakfast included.

Not-so-good. Threadbare bedding. No a/c and one of our fans had just two speeds: off and frantic wobbling. Very thin curtains and parking lot lighting that would wake the dead. Popular with short haul truckers (nice people) who rumble in at midnite. Definitely choose a room in the far corner if you stay here.

Were thinking of Las Palmas next time, but, like you, who needs to pay the price. Will definitely need a/c in July, so thanks again!

Thanks for the tip. I usually stay at the Capri, (same price) in that general area near La Noria, but internet is really bad. How is the wireless at Hotel Villa? For my business, I need internet and even Palms is spotty.

We all need to share more about lodging on our trips around Mexico. It really helps to know where one might stay at a decent price and still get a good clean accommodation, with everything working. I personally just cannot see paying a high dollar for a name and fancy when I am "en route"! All I want is a clean place with a decent bed, an AC or Heater that works without difficulty and a good hot shower available, the rest my eyes are closed to.
The AC’s are really good and cold, but maybe a bit noisy, but not enough to keep one awake after a long drive. The bathrooms are exceptionally clean and the showers are the best . . . . . probably the best of any hotel I have stayed at in a long time. The water is as hot as you want and plenty of it, the water pressure is excellent, certainly on par with any NOB hotels.
There is also a little café located in the cheese shop just a little north of the hotel on the same side of the highway that is located inside a cheese shop. Both the small café and the cheese shop are owned by the same owner of the “La Noria” restaurant. That should give you a hint of what to expect re cleanliness. It is excellent. The cheese shop section sells cheeses from different states of Mexico, all I all a fine selection for a city the size of Matehuala a fine selection. I am not positive but I believe the name is “Seville’s”, it is set back from the highway, next to the Nisan Dealership.
I understand everyone sets their own limits for likes and dislikes, but I believe one would do well with their wallet to give this place a try.
I hope you will like it. Let them know the tall Navy Veteran Gringo sent you. I told them I was so pleased I would post it. If by chance you do give it a try, let the others know what you think about it by posting on here also.

Sorry "dmhaun" . . . .. no internet or cablevision at this hotel, but certainly that is just one reason the prices are about the best in town. Someone has to pay for those extras. It is my understanding that all of Matehuala has poor reception for both internet and cable vision. Probably something to do with the location in the mountains and the lack of local technology. Just a guess! (smiling)
