Today is a big day for Nery. It's his last day of his college classes. No more long two-bus rides to school, no more home work every night. It's been three years of 'round the calender school. All he has left to do is three months of an internship, and then he'll graduate. There's going be be a big feast at his house Sunday 21 Aug to celebrate his achievement and my 80th birthday. I can hardly wait; I'm hungry already.

Alex has another year in veterinary school. Misa has three more years in medical school.

For our November lunch party, my students and I visited a new restaurant in Torreón.

Some good news and some really good news.

Some good news and some really good news.

The good news is Nery graduated from college this week. He spent this past quarter as an intern at the CFE regional office. That office is still in the paper age; all their inventory records, everything from chairs to trucks and tools, are on paper. Nery’s assignment was to write a custom program to computerize the inventory. He completed the task a week ahead of schedule. His supervisor was so pleased that he arranged for Nery to make a formal presentation to the top management.

The really good news is that they were so impressed that they offered him a job. He starts to work in January. What a nice graduation and Christmas present

And that’s not all. Yesterday, his older brother got married and moved out. Nery will now have his own bedroom for the first time in his life. He is a very happy camper!

This was a combination Christmas party and celebration of Nery's very good week.

 A Christmas Surprise

This afternoon (Christmas Eve), my students came bearing food for a surprise lunch. Meatloaf, macaroni salad, ceviche, flan and candy. We cleared off my table and had a fine lunch. The guys even washed the dishes.

Nery came by this afternoon, so I asked him if he and Liz would get married.
He said he hopes so. When? In 2 or 3 years.
Right now they are both working and trying to save money.
BTW, at the graduation, she was awarded special recognization as the valedictorian.

Re: Another Graduation.

Now it's Alex' turn to graduate from his veterinary studies. He has now completed all the course work, but he can't put Doctor with his name just yet. He still has a research project to complete and write a thesis based upon the research. It may be another year before he competes his doctorate.

To celebrate we went to our favorite Chinese place, the Oriental Grill in Torreón. We started with Peking Duck followed by 6 dishes and dessert. The Peking Duck was assembled table-side by our waiter (who speaks excellent Englisj). Good show and good food.

A word about his research. He did his internship at a large dairy farm where he hit it off well with the owner. Alex approached the owner with a research idea using some of his herd. The owner said he did think that would produce particularly useful information, but he did have a project in mind that he would like to see done. If Alex agreed and the school approved, the owner said he would pay all the lab costs which would be around $30,000 pesos. That's the project Alex is working on now. It should end in October, and then comes the grueling task of writing his thesis which must be in both Spanish and English. I will probably have a hand in some of that as I did for the first prospectus.

While this is a large dairy farm with over 1,000 cows, it is not the main business of the company. It's a show farm for an international company that manufactures milking machines and turn-key milking parlors. They also offer computer software, consulting and other dairy-related services -- everything for a dairy farm except the cows.

Another Graduation Day.

Can't Post | Private Reply
Graduation Day 13 June 2013

It’s otficial – Dr Misa Rodríguez MD

Tempus fugit -- It seems just a month or so ago when Misa was graduating from high school and sweating his admission to medical school – 1000 applicants for 90 seats. Today he graduated number 4 in his class. His girlfriend was number 1 Just like Nery’s girlfriend was number 1 in their class. The guys sure know how to pick the smart ladies.

Each student in one of his senior year classes was required to interview a patient, make a complete medical workup, and make an oral report to the class. Misa chose me as his patient because I have a lot of problems he could report on. He got extra credit for being able to conduct the interview entirely in English. I was proud of my small part in his English skills.
_______________________________
It will be a few more days before it’s officially Dr Alex Uribes DVM.
His research project is done, and his thesis has been accepted – but not without a fight. Therein lies a strange tale.

Alex did his senor intern at a large corporate dairy farm. At the end of his intern time, he approached the management with an idea for his theses research project. His idea was rejected, but the company suggested another idea they were interested in studding. The company offered to pay all the lab costs and to provide a small stipend to Alex during the 6 to 8 months the project would run..

The farm is owned by a large agribusiness that specializes in manufacturing and selling dairy equipment – milking machines, milking parlors, turnkey installations, heard management software, etc. They also market a feed supplement designed to increase milk production (volume) and quality (butter fat content). This was the subject of Alex’s research.

After 8 months of data collection, Alex crunched the numbers. The moment of truth – the product doesn’t work!

Management blamed Alex’s methodology and insisted the instrumentation was faulty. But their own technical staff said Alex’s work was proper, and the instruments were in proper calibration.
Next corporate headquarters sent their lawyers to pressure the school to reject the thesis. The school displayed considerable backbone by refusing. The school said the research and the thesis have been reviewed and accepted. After more back and forth, the school agreed not to publish the thesis, marking it proprietary.

No word on the fate of the feed supplement.
______________________________
A year ago Nery graduated from college witja a degree in computer science. After a very successful internship at CFE, he was told that CFE wished to hire him. But for a variety of reasons, the call never came. He couldn’t find a computer job, so he went to work on a large (1000 cows) dairy working on a feed supplement research project very much like what Alex was doing. The big difference is this product actually works.

But all that is about to be past history for Nery because the CFE call has finally come. He goes to work in the CFE IT department next month.

A VERY HAPPY CAMPER.
