Cell Phone registration data base destroyed

La Secretaría de Gobernación (Segob) today announced that the data that was collected by the Renaul agency was completely destroyed today. The congress put and end to the agency effective last 17 April and today they insured that the only copy was completely erased and that there is no backup copy.

This was the information that the government collected when you purchased a cell phone and you had to register the line in your name. That registration is no longer required of anyone. The agency was closed down and no longer operates. It was a potentially dangerous data base for the individuals that were registered. The data base linked names, CURP numbers, addresses and phone numbers.

I never would have guessed that they would get rid of this registration. Oh well I have my CURP. So it was no big deal to register it.

I never bothered to get a CURP. But seems I remember it was a typical "didn't think it through" Mexico thing as something like 10,000 Carlos Slims were registered. So, seems like the CURP is also passe.

Fortunately, the Clave Único de Registro de Población is not passé.
The Gob. decided to maintain its original uses, so, the only change is to stop using it to try to track cell phone owners.

The CURP still is used for school registrations, tax filings, business records, membership in government-run health services, passport applications, et al, plus it is also now used in all Civil Registry individual records (birth and death certificates) and certified copies thereof.

I had a need for one. Don't laugh :) I was writing a column called Tech Talk in those days for the Guadalajara Reporter. And I needed something to write about. I was able to relate it to things technical by saying if you had a CURP it would be easier to get your cell phone registered.

And strangely before I got my official CURP ID, immigration created a much shorter alpha-numeric ID that they called my CURP. And every year when I renew my immigration papers I give the officials a copy of my real CURP ID. They never use it. They keep on entering the much shorter artificially produced ID they came up with years ago. Who knows. :)

Interesting, my FM2 has my real CURP which INM got for me without my even asking.
I'm sure it's real because I verified it here.

Yes, I also got a real CURP when I first got an FM2. I don't think they were issued for FM3's but I'm not sure. Who knows with the new visa format but they were still asking for mine last Oct when I renewed.

We got our CURP for the first time when we renewed our FM3. We didn't request it or anything, it was just part of the renewed card.

They destroyed all official copies, but, I doubt seriously all copies can be destroyed. A few months after this failed program was deployed, I was offered a pirated copy!!! I know of thousands of copies, it was also found online.

The CURP discussion:
Be careful with the computer generated CURP's. The algorithm has a flaw for those of us that only use one official last name. If you do not use a maternal last name it trips up the auto generated CURP's.

The CURP is an alpha numeric code using first initial, DOB, BOTH paternal and maternal last names and the State where you were born. For foreigners, it's the NELX near the end of the sequence (I believe it's an acronym for nacido en el extranjero). If you participate in the Mexico formal economy you need a valid CURP (employment, income taxes, investments, credit etc etc) .

In Mexico, an individual has several ID's: RFC, CURP, IMSS#, IFE or INM #, passport, Driver's License...
