Apparently Air Canada adopted the policy as of June 13th, and Westjet expects to be following suit soon, so that theory is out.

It seems TACA Airlines will still transport pets in the cabin to Mexico, so this info may be useful to some folks, depending on your destination. Who knows when that will change.

There is an attempt being made through the Mexican Tourism ministry to have the regulation regarding pets traveling in the cabin either modified or rescinded . My wife and I went to the check in counters for Alaska and United at PV airport last Thursday. We saw four families ,one with three young children that were being informed that their pets could not travel with them. Tears were flowing and the Mexican vacation spoilt. Tempers were short as there were no hard sided carriers available. It was not pleasant and the airline staff were left to take the brunt of the angry passengers. Anyway the message is being listened to. Please call 1 800 446 3942 . Tell them you are protesting article 2.1.2 of the DGAE Circular dated May 2012.

There is very good news to report. Jaltemba Bay blogger has published a response which, amazingly, says the law is being reformed and they expect everything to be in place as early as September. They are even going to permit pets in the cabin on domestic flights, apparently. She asks that everyone keep the pressure on in the meantime, to ensure this proceeds as he says. Scroll way down and check her updates of June 21 and June 22 to read this great news, followed by the contact information she has posted.

We do not sedate or medicate our cats at all. This on the recommendation of our vet and because we do not know how they will react either in the cabin under the seat or in the tropical heat when we arrive. To be honest they never have required anything as they both behave themselves. We carry an emergency supply of litter , water and pet food enough for a meal if our travel plans get altered.

Thanks for the information Sparks, it just goes to show that if enough of a fuss is made , the airlines and Mexico Tourism were swamped with irate callers , that regulations can be reversed. They can change FM3's and any number of other procedures, but don't mess with our pets!

American Airlines informed me today that any service animal except for the vision impared is for emotional support and they do not have to allow it into the cabin.

The flight is from the US to Guadalajara !

The call back said get a doctors note or the animal can travel down below for $175.00 US.

I could be stuck, since my Dr. does not have an office where I am plus the airline will not take a fax or copy of a fax, plus in line with the note below I do not have the orig copy of the dogs paper work with me (I never carry my own except for my USA Passpt ).

UPDATE

Based on calls to several airlines it appears that some folks wanting to take their dogs on planes as service animals have produced their own documentation (Like prople having: Fake ID cards and Drivers Licenses and SSN Cards). Some major carriers that will permit non seeing eye dogs in the cabins want to see a copy of the dogs training record so that they can keep it on file and contact the agency.

If one cannot produce the training documents for the service dog, they want paperwork from a doctor and maybe meds that are taken for the condition, plus a 48 Hr advance notification so they can check things out for themselves. Very Interesting !

If this is in fact true it is a sad day for mexico. EVERY mexican has a dog....how the heck did EVERY mexican allow this to happen? I guess the mexican will travel dogless.

I'll comment on this, and risk getting stones thrown at me. I'm not trying to be mean-spirited, I don't hate animals, just stating my opinion.

Most Mexicans remember that their dog is their dog. Not their child, not their baby, but their DOG. The great majority of Mexicans I know would never dream of flying and dragging along their pets, either in the cabin or down below. Their dog will be waiting at their house gate, tail wagging, when they get home. The housekeeper, other family members or a neighbor will make sure Pepe has water and food, and a daily walk while they're away (in an ideal world).

Regarding bringing animals into an aircraft cabin, why is it that many pet owners never consider or care that an estimated 10% of the population is allergic to animals? Pookie may get off the plane, but his dander or other allergens remain in the cabin waiting for the next flight.

Rather than 10% of all persons being allergic, I suspect the % is closer to 1/10 of 1%, if that high.

I just phoned a friend a retired Doc and his lady friend a retired nurse at a local retirement home. And they laughed at me when I asked if the 10% figure could be correct. I guess there are about 600 people at Horizon house, and the retired nurse suggested that maybe one person there might be allergic to a dog. but she doubted it

Yes, they were making fun of me for asking the question so maybe the % is higher than 1/10th of one %, but I flew with an under the seat dog with me in the late 90s between Lake Chapala and Seattle, WA or Vancouver, BC quite often and never did anyone mention the allergy issue to me.

A WebMD article regarding pet allergies estimates that 10% of the USA population is allergic to dogs and cats, primarily cats.
