Car Permit Expired with FM2

Can't Post | Private Reply
When I first moved to Mexico I was under an FMT which allowed me to bring my vehicle under an temporary import sticker. This last January I applied for, and received, an FM2. The problem is that I applied for an FM2 "rentista" which would have allowed me to keep my vehicle. For some reason or another I received an FM2 ïmmigranta"which does not! I did not notice this until I received a rejection letter from aduana when I tried to update the info with them. To make matters worse they mailed the letter to my stateside address so I did not get it until this last week. My car permit expired today so now I have an illegal car and the wrong FM2! The INM office here in Zacatecas says they can have me a new FM2 by Tuesday under "rentista"(I do not want to earn $ in Mexico) but I am not sure how this helps my permit problem. Once I get my new "rentista" FM2 do I need to talk to aduana and see if they can help? Do I need to get a temporary car permit for illegal cars (can I even do this since I have an FM2)? Will my new FM2 work good enough since all car permits for FM2 "rentistas" are expired anyway? Any ideas, tips, suggestions would be appreciated!

I think that your very last suggestion is the best. However, if you have a deposit with Aduana ($200-$400 USD), you will lose it. If that's the case, and you don't want to lose the deposit, go to Aduana and with the new "rentista" status card and application letter and reapply for the TIP extension without going into a lot of detail with them. The more detail you give them, the more you're likely to confuse them and NOT get the extension.

Every bureaucrat, everywhere in the world, has one standard answer when they are confused: "NO!"

Thanks for the info! I was leaning towards the later option since I don't care about losing the deposit but if there is a way to do it right I want to try, What is a TIP extension? Is that the one i was reading about for 3-5 days to get an illegal car to the border? If I do that will I lose my deposit anyway and then have to pay another one?

The TIP extension is what you get from Aduana when you renew your FM3 or FM2 rentista and then go to Aduana for the extension of the Temporary Importation Permit, i.e., the sticker. IF you go to Aduana as soon as you have that corrected card and the letter that accompanies it, you MIGHT get an extension that will allow you to get your deposit back. At least you have tried. Regardless, they MUST give you the extension, since your new FM2 card should clearly indicate rentista status (actually immigrante rentista), so your car definitely is not illegal. Whoever typed the first card at INM just goofed and forgot the rentista part. But, as I said before, there is no reason to go into all this with the Aduana folks, as you would very likely just confuse them.

Don't even worry about that thing for getting an illegal car to the border. It doesn't apply to your case at all.
