Costco on Lazaro Cardenas. Great place to people watch and free food samples, too.

They also have really good fast food at the outdoor cafe. Their hot dogs and pizza are a very good value and tastes pretty darn good also. You can even wrap a couple in a bag or zip lock to take on the bus with you.

You guys are hysterical! Costco, eh?
OK, I'll be honest- you are pathetic if that's what you think of when considering Guadalajara hangouts.
I would head to centro and wander around. See what catches your interest. We absolutely love the historic center of town! I can spend hours there walking around, people watching, eating, shopping.
We also enjoyed just chilling out in any of the many plazas or parks.

Although, you are very right sioux4noff, and at first, I thought that we were being teased. Then, I remember that if someone were to ask where I go most when in Guadalajara, I would have to confess that it's to Costco and the food stand.

No, I would not recommend to anyone who wants to visit Guadalajara that they should take in Costco. It's just that this is where I go most often Don't tell anyone :)

I for one have been there often, almost too often since it is about 10 minutes from the house, then one has Walmart.

I was thinking about a different kind of place then Costco, the other day i thought it was wine tasting day.

Of course you are looking for some place else Salto Jorge: And I am sure there are many great places to visit. I was making fun of myself, because I don't know where those places are either and only know Costco, Radio Shack, etc. :)

I shouldn't have posted anything, but I couldn't help making fun of myself :)

Salto_jorge, I, too, was being facetious. Still, the original post did answer your post.
As has been mentioned, the historical district is awesome. Don't pass the art museum nor the Presidential Palace(or a similar name). The church is, as are most of the churches in Mexico, worth the time to visit as well. It really is a very nice experience.
If I stepped on your toes, I apologize.

Centro Historico is OK once in awhile; very overrated IMHO, and I am a history buff. If you are younger, a great hangout is Andares, the latest gleaming mall in Zapopan. The place has all the requisite stores and restaurants to keep you busy in a fantastic, upscale new community; other malls include Galerias, Pabellon, la Gran Plaza and the older Plaza del Sol. You can also catch a Mexican Pro Beach Volleyball tournament, Mexican Pro Basketball game, outdoor Alejandro Sanz concert, college (american) football game or Tecos pro Soccer game at Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara. You can go ice skating at Icelandia, or go for tacos at Tacos Tepeyac, the best. There are innumerable things to do; heck, just go walk around Providencia and explore a great neighborhood on foot.

And for those who look down there noses at malls, hey, I met my wife at Plaza del Sol 12 years ago!

One of the most famous hangouts in Guadalajara is at Calle Pino Suárez 78, which runs into the Plaza de la Libertad (just to the back of Father Hidalgo's famous statue). Look for Cantina La Fuente--it's been there since 1921. Wonderful characters fill the place, there is often great music, and for the price of a beer or two you can hang out all evening. Don't look for foreigners at La Fuente, though--it's full of local intellectuals and wannabes. Spanish is a must.
