Oaxaca Hotels???

I did a search on the subject and most of the threads on hotels in Oaxaca were quite old. In planning for an August trip to Oaxaca, I have been taking a look at various hotel options. One that grabbed my attention is:

Any comments or recommendations on this and other hotels would be most welcome!

Hotel Casona del Llano which is across from Parque Llano and they have parking.

They had one of the apartments and I took a single room with double bed, coffee pot, tiny fridge and microwave. The apartments have a little kitchen and a bedroom and bath upstairs. It is located behind the Cathedral and is near my favorite restaurant, La Olla. In fact the owners of the restaurant and the hotel are relatives. It was a great location and a lovely experience. I will go back. We parked on the street and generally had no problem finding a place to put the car but there is a nearby parking garage. There was room in the rooms to store all our purchases.

We spent the week of May6-through 13 of this year with friends from Mazatlan in Oaxaca at:

We had a great, ground floor room and the breakfasts were included in the rate - off the menu, anything we wanted. The rooms had king sized beds, ample hot water, excellent wi-fi connection, cable TV, were clean and it was quiet. It is only 1.5 blocks to the zocalo and while they do have free parking in a garage, we were able to park right out front with no problems.
This old home is still in the family and has been converted to a small hotel...lots of history there.

We WILL use them again!!! Good luck on your search.
While there my friend and I looked at a lot of other place....what are you looking for? Anything in particular?

We are only staying in Oaxaca two nights and won't be spending a great deal of time around the hotel. We do enjoy hotels that have some historic feel and are not into high styling at high priced resorts. What I would call mid-priced hotels in the $50 - $80USD range would be our norm. Location is critical since we often prefer to go out for a walk to see some sights and go out for dinner. It was suggested that we might wish to look in the vicinity of the Santo Domingo Church because of the restaurants in that area. In looking at the Oaxaca map, it appears that somewhere between the above mentioned church and the Zocalo might be best?

I try to be the "Queen of Cheap" but sometimes have to settle for a little more $$$ - but not much more. We felt we got a great value for the $$ at the hotel there which is certainly in your range- parking, breakfast, strong wi-fi.....a 3-5 min walk to the zocalo with terrific people watching, some fine restaurants and sometimes free concerts there in the zocalo - seems there is always something going on. The prices for breakfast on the menu ranged from $40-60+ mx, so when we deducted the meals for two, felt we got a great deal on the room price.
I think that no matter where you stay in Centro, you will be fine depending on the parking situation....we prefer to be in an area where it is pretty level and we too can walk to museums, theater, etc. Wishing we could be there now!!!!

I forgot to mention to ask for Eli if you call during the day......he was wonderful and spoke great English which he wanted to practice, having learned a lot of it in Ireland. Be sure to tell him the people from Comala and Mazatlan recommended the hotel and maybe he can get you a good price for the room. He was just as nice as can be!!!!

I highly recommend Hotel Casantica. I live in Oaxaca and therefore don't stay in hotels, but I have arranged for guests there. Great location. Maybe it has a special place in my heart because it was the first place I stayed in Oaxaca back in 1997 when it was Hotel Pombo, 70 pesos a night, appropriately price! ja ja It has been totally renovated by a couple...he;s an architect and she an interior designer.

Geri, How are things downtown now with the maestros? Are there any major interruptions? Not trying to hijack the thread but it might affect where someone "hangs their hat". We LOVE Oaxaca.

Thank you for your comments. I had gone through much of the hotel list on TripAdvisor and done some extensive looking at various properties. I kept going back to Hotel Casantica as it just seemed appealing and stands out.

Willie:

Some of the reports I have read about the teachers strike have not been encouraging with respect to the disruptions in centro but we are holding out hope that they have it out of their system before we visit in August. At any rate, we will pay attention to the current reports in August and if things are still in an uproar, revisions can be made to our plans.

Neil...that's a good idea. When I left Oaxaca a week ago, rumor was that teachers were staying one more week. If you want, you can send me a PM for a firsthand report around mid-July. I will be in Oaxaca then. I feel certain that the "campout" will have ended. A knowledgeable taxi driver told me that the teachers' demands were met BEFORE the campout and they agreed to a one-week occupation (tradition, in my opinion), so I am puzzled about the extra week. Extra demands? Quien sabe?

The teachers had a vote late last week and and they voted to continue the strike but it was close. A teacher here in Oaxaca who is not taking part in the strike seems to think that they will end the strike on June 14th. We will wait and see.

Thanks for that insight. I read a news article that said the issue of "teacher competency" is involved. There are those (in the govt. I think) who are trying to get teachers to take competency tests and/or get more education. Some aren't even high school grads. The problem isn't simple since so many of the school are in such remote areas it's difficult to get teachers to teach there.

Interesting about the June 14 date, because that's the date that the former governor ordered tear gas cannisters dropped from the sky and 4th floor of a zocalo hotel onto the camped out teachers in 2006.

Opinions and "guesses" run rampant. There seems to be very little public support for the teachers, but they have a strong union and numbers.

It is true, the tarps were down and the streetsweepers were out in force this morning when I went by the zocalo. The zocalo is now open for everyone's enjoyment.

I'm looking for a hotel in the historic center that has rooms/suites with kitchenettes. It appears this one does not?

We just stayed 5 nights and 4 days at CasAntica. We saw nothing to earn a bad review! In fact, I plan to write a good one on TripAdvisor.
