Driving Mexican plated car in Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
A friend was over last and we were having a discussion about his haviing been stopped while traveling with his wife of Mexican origin, who is a dual citizen as is he. The federales stopped them for an imagined infraction - read mordida - and told them that if they didn't pay, they would confiscate their vehicle. Their pickup has local plates and we were thinking that only the aduana had the right to take a vehicle.........true or not? They called her father, and when asked who they were calling - they told the police that they were calling Celaya, which is known has a hot bed of you-know-what. They were then released without having to make any payments but we were left with the question above. This happened on the autopista.
Thx for any input!
Willie

This sounds like a case of theory vs practice.
In practice, the police can detain/retain a vehicle that they believe may have been part of the commission of a crime. They can tow the vehicle to their impound yard and hold it, charging daily storage fees, until the matter is resolved. Sometimes, here in Yucatan, we have vehicles impounded in this manner after minor traffic accidents, holding the vehicles until the police are convinced that financial and legal issues have been resolved.

So, in theory, the police may not be able to easily permanently confiscate a vehicle, but they can tow, impound, and store them until the police and abogados work things out. The three people I know who have faced this found that our police will often try to pressure the parties to settle something on-site by threatening to detain (temporarily hold in jail) everyone (including passengers) and impound the vehicles, to force people to settle financial and matters of fault on the spot.

e.g. Last year, one friend ran a stop sign and got T-boned by a car that had the right of way. Initially, the driver and passengers of the "innocent" car refused offers by the guilty friend's insurance representative to fix the car, to take them to a nice private hospital, and pay all bills. The innocents pushed for having the friend arrested. The police patiently worked with the innocents, pointing out that the innocents' car had a broken tail-light and other safety infractions - and the police told (pressured) the innocents that they would all (passengers included) be taken to jail if they did not accept the "fine offer of the insurance agent".

This is why we strongly advise having auto insurance and keeping a working cell phone with you while driving (with the insurance company's number on speed dial), and to not move vehicles after an accident, and to rely on your insurance rep to represent you, whether you are at fault or are innocent - especially if you do not understand Spanish well.

Glad your friends "escaped" with themselves, the vehicle, and their wallet intact.

"they were calling Celaya, which is known has a hot bed of you know what..."

OK, I'll be the first (and maybe only) to say 'no, I don't know what'.... or more importantly I don't know how/why a feigned call to Celaya would cause the Federal Police to back off the rouse. Explain por favor as I might need to use this tactic as I drive around Mexico.

If you follow some of the Mexican news broadcasts, or look at Borderland Beat, you will understand that it is an area of a lot of "interest" of those fighting the drug war in this country. It was not a feigned call. The woman has family in that area, not connected to any vice, but the federales are aware on the connotations. I wouldn't try that ploy unless I actually knew someone in one of those areas...then you won't get caught in a lie.

You seem have some info on Celaya that is not as common knowledge as you think. What's the scoop?

Most of my news intake is from Mexican sources (TV, print, web etc) and this is the first time I heard of Celaya being called a place of "interest" for those fighting the drug war. I have visited a few times and driven through Celaya countless times...but that means little.

Please don't kill the messenger......only repeated what was told to us by the person that it happened to.....her family is from Michoacan so maybe there is a small pueblo by that name somewhere there. I have looked on my maps and can't find anything by that name or Celayo either.......
In any event the original thread was about what the federales can or cannot do to confiscate your car.

WHERE on Bob's board, Rolly? Once in that board there are a gob of categories, so to find a certain thread, you have to know what category it is in AND what the title (subject) of the thread is, otherwise you'll never find it. I sure couldn't find this one.

Rolly wrote "There is a disturbing story about the federal police on Bob's board." Yes I read that and sure hope this isn't a new trend.

I'm looking forward to finding out whether I need to update my 2005 Texas tabs on 2001 highly dented Ford Explorer

But it DOES NOT, Rolly, it just takes me to a login page, I login with my facebook login, then it just dumps me into the forum index. A search of the forum(s) doesn't find a single thing by the partial name /…lice-took-my-vehicle OR took my vehicle.

Our Aduana office is telling expats to register their new INM permit/visa expiration dates with Aduana to keep their Temporary Import Permits in force, regardless of when you got your Aduana permit. When the vehicle owner registers the new visa expiration date, our Aduana office issues a nice letter documenting the current registration date and confirming that your car permit is still valid.

Problem is, at insidelakeside.com there is no 'The Octagon'. There are 16 categories like "Out on the Mirador", "Events Around the Lake", etc, but nada Octagon. Maybe one has to be logged in to view that particular thread.

What say yee, Bob?

It was not my intention to kill the messenger, I was just surprised to hear Celaya is a place of "interest." It seems like a quiet and boring town.

Your comment peaked my interest, and I did some casual surfing. Celaya does have some very heavy families of major "interest." I should not be surprised...the amount of money in the trade is astonishing and I'm sure there are many influential families with not so clean histories.
