A few years ago, no one was allowed to temporarily import more than one car. We had brought one car in in my name, and were going to import another one in my Mexican wife's name a year later. At that time, a Mexican that could prove they did not live in México could temporarily import a car. My wife had a valid permanent residency card (green card) for The US, so we did not expect any problems. The ignoramuses at the border had never heard of that rule, and they insisted that the car be imported in my name. The Army bank was telling me to do it that way, so I did. Not very legitimate, but no problems. We were able to nationalize both cars under two different vehicle amnesties, very cheaply. Vehicle amnesties are to legalize “chocolates”, foreign registered cars being driven by Mexicans. They occurred sporadically, they are always opposed by the automobile dealers, and they usually become a political issue on a national level. There may never be another. Remember. If you have a car or two here, every driver must be named on your insurance policy or there is no coverage for them. If you loan your car to your wife, sons or daughters, maid or gardener, they are not covered unless they are named on your policy here. I had a hell of a time convincing my Mexican wife to stop letting her uncles and male cousins stop driving our cars. Part of the macho culture here is that men usually always want to drive.
