Cristiane Amanpour has just released an interview with the Mexican Ambassador to the United States, Arturo Sarukhan. She makes some points about how dangerous it has been for journalists covering this situation. The Ambassador makes some very interesting and powerful points: 1) that this is not about stopping drug trafficking, that will be impossible to stop, it is about restoring the 'rule of law' in Mexico which no other political regime has been willing to take on. Now this 'rule of law' is a much more sophisticated notion than you might at first imagine - google it 2) this rule of law will take one generation to put in place (10 years?) 3) within 20 to 25 years the demographics of Mexico will be much the same as the U.S. is today. There were some other interesting soundbites - all in all, well worth viewing.

I'm a big fan of Cristiane Amanpour and it was good to see her in another interview. The Ambassador was well spoken (his English is perfect) and he made some excellent points. Of course, he was also making the subtle point that the solution lies in staying with PAN in the federal government. Aside from the political angle, I think he is a bit optimistic that these changes (with or without PAN) can be accomplished in 10 or so years. Shifting the culture to a rule of law as he described is a fundamental shift in Mexican culture. Can it happen? Perhaps.

Did she have to bring Rick Perry into it? I don't know why the US has this blind view that the problems all lie below the border. Why don't they ever seem to notice that all of these drugs and weapons are moving on both sides of the border, if Rick Perry wants to help out he should put his National Guard on the northern side of the border and stop the drugs there, or stop the guns going south. Instead he talks about invading Mexico to "help out", the man is an idiot.
