Michoacán, a better option for Lakeside residents?

After reading about all the crime going on in Lakeside maybe some of the Ex-Pats should get the hell out of Dodge and come to Patzcuaro. At the moment there are no cartel struggles in that region plus it might even be cheaper.

"At the moment" there's no trouble Lakeside either. Michoacan has had much more trouble than this area. We love Morelia, Parzcuaro, and Uruapan but have avoided them for a couple of years.

There are a whole lot more places than these two places in Mexico why restrict yourself to Michoacan or Jalisco?

My wife and I lived in Morelia for quite some time. About a year ago, we were really exhausted with the constant narcoviolencia in both Morelia and Pátzcuaro. We moved to Mexico City to get away from what had become, for us, an intolerable situation. YMMV.

And don't kid yourself: the same kinds of criminal confrontations continue in Michoacán right now. They are simply not news highlights.

They wouldn't like it here. The weather is very cold in the winter, and there is very little English spoken.

Yeah Morelia is a hell of a mess with the common robbers and thieves. I thought about Patzcuaro because for the time being only one cartel is in charge. Not so at the Jalisco-Michoacan border where the New Generation vs Templars is playing out. And over by Lake Chapala you have Zetas/Milenio vs Sinaloa. For the most part central Michoacan is pretty safe not to mention Tierra Caliente which can be defined as the stronghold of the Templars but I as sure as hell wouldn´t live there.
Off the top of my head Tequisquiapan sounds cool but I have no idea if it´s less expensive than Lakeside or SMA. Patzcuaro is probably cheaper than all those places. And no I´m not a realtor or landowner with special interests. I´m just trying to pimp the state I live in.

Michoacán and Patzcuaro in particular are currently our favorite places in Mexico but we have a "bucket list" of other destinations to experience before we could state that such judgement still stands. During our last trip to the area, we stopped at a Pemex on the Morelia-Patzcuaro Hwy. A gentlemen saw that we had Jalisco plates (on our rental car) and asked if we were from Lake Chapala. After indicating NO, he proceeded to say they had lived at Lake Chapala for five years and then sold so that they could experience the "Real Mexico" by living in Michoacán. His words, so please don't shoot the messenger!

I fail to understand why some expats seem to have a need to do that. Why not enjoy life where you are "as is"?

Not to worry, a majority(50%+) of the ex pats currently living in the Lake Chapala area couldn't handle or appreciate Patzcuaro! So as not to start a battle, I will refrain from listing the reasons why but you can start with the fact that Patzcuaro is far too Mexican.
