Perhaps this belongs in the "travel" thread, but I never go there, so this seems a good fit.

A friend of mine, a Catholic lay-brother who left U.S. academia to serve in one of the more destitute parts of Central America, is getting a well-deserved vacation. He's a 65 year old, and just looking for a beach and if there's some historical and cultural sites, all the better. He has some airline vouchers, but not a lot of money (He hasn't taken vows of poverty, he might as well have, seeing what his diocese is able to pay him) and obviously, in his line of work, sex-drugs and rock-n-roll aren't likely to be an attraction. Well, maybe rock-n-roll.

Suggestions, anyone?

How about Yucatan's Gulf coast? Low costs. Not too busy, as long as he does not come between June 10 and Sept 1 (vacation season). Good fishing. Good food. Fly into Merida or Cancun. If Cancun, take a $35 bus ride across the peninsula. Excellent ruins.* Beautiful beaches around Celestun - Sisal. Great bioreserves at Celestun and also Rio Lagartos. Conservative atmosphere, where the Catholic Churches are nearly full for most masses. Friendly people. Very mild food. OK beaches from Chuburna - Chelem - Progreso - Chicxulub - Uaymitun - Telchac Puerto.

*Uxmal and Chichen Itza are world class archeological sites. Dzibilchaltun's Casa de Siete Muñecas is the earliest documented astronomical observatory (4'th century) for accurately monitoring the northernmost and southernmost transits of the rising and setting of the moon, plus the transits for the rising each and all of all the visible planets, tracking and predicting the appearances of Venus, along with tracking the solar equinoxes. This gives it the distinction of having the most archeo-astronomical tracking devices of any ancient building - which also means there is not a single 90º angle between any of the exterior or interior walls and the window placements are skewed to precisely create the 5º slots & slits for viewing the rising planets. (Hint: 1,000's of people gather to "see" the equinoxes through the specially aligned doorways, but only 1 or 2 carefully placed people actually see the full effect each year - as combination of front sites and back-sites align to a single specific spot.)
