You may not be aware of the Progreso-Merida/Merida-Progreso bus line. There is a bus every 15 minutes going in either direction. The busses past by pretty much all the major shopping places with Merida Centro as it's final stop. The Progreso bus line is far cheaper than a cab. The idea is to take the bus into town then use cabs (if needed) to go to various stops. Take the bus back to Progreso.
