hotels in San Miguel de Allende

We are currently in Oaxaca with friends that want to go on to SMA but are looking for a hotel for less than $1000 mx per night. The place we have stayed in the past hasn't gotten very good reviews lately, so can anyone suggest anything? We are going our separate ways next week.

We have stayed twice for a total of five nights at the Best Western Monteverde Express. Nothing all that fancy but our rooms have always been clean, quiet and we really like the location. About a 6 long block and maybe 10 minute walk up the hill to the main plaza and a bunch of restaurants. Hotels.com is showing a $78/night rate:

We have always been able to find a rate below $70/night on the Best Western site. Unless things are really jumping in San Miguel de Allende, I would guess that you could contact the hotel direct and negotiate a good rate. The manager spoke excellent English and he was moaning about the lack of tourist traffic when we were there last.

We have never eaten a meal there, so I won't comment about that aspect.
