". . . where the green of the gulf meets the blue of the sea.
What makes it all happen is still a mystery to me..."

Gulf coast water quality depends on how the cycle of sea-grass blooming and die-off is going.
Progreso has a lovely beach, with swimming much enjoyed by locals, Meridadanos, and large numbers of visiting Mexican tourists. Even when the water is a little green, it's still safe for swimming - (green does not mean fecal coliforms are present, as happens at some other beaches).

Dear Unknown Swiss Garry ;>)

What Steve has told you is true (he lives there!), but the above statement is also true. While the waters/beaches around Progresso are nice enough, they do not compare (obviously a subjective statement) with most beaches on the Caribbean side.

If/when one drives east from Progresso towards Dzilam de Bravo, the beaches get less 'dingy' and the water more 'clear' (and the population more sparce). By the time one gets to Rio Lagartos and surely Isla Holbox (ole-bosch), which are technically still in the Gulf, the beaches are a beautiful white and the water is crystal clear.

I HAVE ONE MORE QUESTION. SO SORRY--- i heard somewhere, possibly on here, that the beach water etc. is not as clear etc. in progreso than toward cancun. it had something to do with the fact that progreso is in the gulf of mexico while cancun and qroo are on the carribean sea.

does anyone have any experience with either of these situations and would care to comment. I only have a deposit on my house in progreso and would be prepared to lose that if the sea was dirty or unusable in progreso vs qroo.

i would sincerely appreciate advice.

In my opinion the gulf is nice most of the year. Norte's mess thing up for days though. In Progresso the water is nicer east of the pier than further west.

The Riviera Maya Caribbean is fantastic, with great warm water and lots of life. I dive regularly and can see 100 feet to the bottom on most days.
