Well, thank goodness for neighbors! My "vicious roomer" from last year (the guy who was sniffing around here for legal "advise" about avoiding eviction... leaving out that he wasn't paying the rent, pilfering food and money... and making physical threats against others in the house) is apparently back here in Mazatlán.
The security guard at the PEMEX station on the corner told me the guy was hanging around looking for me today... not that I'm worried particularly... but it does show that saying buenos dias/tardes/noches to the neighbors every day when you pass is not only good manners, it's a cheap insurance policy.
