Hi Cynthia, you do not need to pay a cat sitter unless you choose to. There are many experienced house and pet sitters here in Mexico who do not charge for their services.
I highly recommend the housecarers.com website. There are many other house/pet sitting websites too but I have found House Carers to be the most professional and the most up to date with the largest number of sitters and home-owners (particularly for Mexico).
Prospective sitters agree to House Carer's house/pet sitting contract when they register with this website.
You will find sitters who do charge and who do not charge for their services. And this information will be stated in their advertised profile.
