Best ways to ease dental pain?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi all,

I am having a lot of very terible dental pain. I have tried everything I can possibly think of to ease the pain and nothing is working. My entire mouth hurts really badly, not just one spot. I can't concentrate because of the pain and I need to concentrate. So I need a way to ease the pain quickly and easily. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
Brian

See a good dentist.

If there are no underlying infections, gum disease, etc, then consider that when our teeth in our bottom jaw are not aligned well with our upper teeth, then it quickly causes pain and also sensitivity to heat and cold. When an entire row of teeth (or all teeth) have pain, it can be caused by a misalignment of the jaw. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) does not have a single fixed position, and can move. see http://saveyourself.ca/...les/self-massage.php .

My dentist also had me prop-open my jaw slightly by placing a clean chop stick between my teeth - sitting just behind the cuspids for 5 - 10 minutes. Strangely, gently propping open your mouth with a pencil-diameter/chop-stick diameter piece of clean wood causes the jaw muscles to release some of their tension - and it also shifts the lower jaw position.

Best of luck,
steve

There is an acupressure point in the webbing between your thumb and first finger that can temporarily reduce pain. Google it - there are articles and probably YouTube videos that show how to do it. This has worked for me sometimes.

Another thing that you could be doing is grinding your teeth in your sleep, which can create a lot of problems. Try using a mouthguard at night, which cushions your teeth from grinding and the problem may go away.

Strange, part of my earlier post was lost while typing.

After seeing a good dentist to confirm that there is no underlying dental problem, like gum disease or bone infection, etc, then you might consider that there might be a problem with your temporomadibular joint (TMJ). Check out http://www.webmd.com/...mandibular-disorders for disorders of the TMJ => TMD.

My dentist had me doing trigger and release massage on my jaw muscles to help get my TMJ to stay back into a normal position, which relieves the tooth-on-tooth pressure than can be caused by tense jaw muscles pulling the TMJ into a peculiar position. Massage both sides of your jaw simultaneously with firm pressure applied with fingertips or your thumbs equally pushing on each side (in the manner described in the massage website listed above). The dentist combined pressure, with small circular motions, followed by firm downwards strokes simultaneously on each side of your jaw. (Applying equal pressure at the same time to both sides of the jaw keeps you from pushing the jaw sideways.) Start on the jaw muscles where they attach to your cheek bones, and work your way down. He said that short sessions of 2-5 minutes of massaging jaw muscles several times a day is often enough.

He also advised (after massage) to place a clean wooden chop stick across my bite - placed just behind the cuspids - lowering the jaw, spacing the teeth apart - relaxing it for 5 min to 10 min.

Hope you feel better. It took just 2 days of occasional self-massage and jaw relaxation to relieve my similar tooth pains.

Simple - Tequila! Then you have to worry about a liver problem, and you are too drunk to drive to the dentist.

Yucalandia is on target with his suggestions.

Strange, same things has been bothering me for about two weeks, only the pain was getting from tolerable to, as you describe it, fairly unbearable, could not concentrate on anything else. Saw a dentist this past Tuesday. No caries, no bone damage, no apparent infect, no significant exterior inflammation. Have you been particularly tense recently, he asked. Applying pressure on one´s teeth means than, usually, one tooth or set of upper and lower teeth are bearing the pressure. In my case, the apparent center of pain (at first hard to find, since it was shreaking pain throughout my face) was where I had had root canal work about six years ago. And my jaw is equally sensitive to hot as well as cold liquids.

Had I ever had a mouth guard he asked. I sheepishly admitted, yes, but had never really used it.

Now I am on pain medicine and an anti-inflammatory, and faithfully using the mouth/tooth guard, while chewing my cud on the unaffected other side of my jaw, and this morning was the first in about five nights that I slept through the night and well. Hope you will be able to report similar relief.

Am curious as to why you did not go directly to a dentist!

Sinus infection can cause dental pain, especially if it feels like the whole jaw or both jaws hurt. Try taking some antihistamines and see if that helps.

I had pain many years ago that sounds similar to yours. The dentist diagnosed my problem as TMJ. He taught me to retrain the way I held my mouth by pressing my lips together and saying, "Me, me, me, me, me" over and over until I could "feel" again the way I should hold my mouth and teeth. It worked for me but it took time. Now, whenever I find myself clenching my teeth, I say, "me, me, me, me, me" to readjust my mouth. I hope this helps.

That's a good tip and all, but are you sure that everybody doesn't now think you are insane!?!?

Our bones are constantly shifting, but do so very slowly. A bad habit of posture can haunt you many years down the road.

Is There Some Reason A Dentist Is Not Being Consulted?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I had an abscessed tooth in the USA a couple of years ago. I tried dulling the pain with NSAIDS, tylenol, and finally enough Oxycodone to knock me for a loop (far greater than what I was Rx'd) All turned out to be 101% ineffective.

This was all going on while doctors and dentists in my HMO at the expense of my suffering day and night tried various woosy antibiotics. None would listen to my plea that only KEFLEX® an antibiotic used for deep infections seemed to work. Finally after two weeks, I obtained an Rx for Keflex. The pain started easing 12 hours after the 1st dose.

But this was for an infection. And was Rx'd by a doctor. A dentista had emphatically endorsed Keflex to me in Patzcuaro, Michoacan years before.

Please see a dentist before you do anything.
