Want to check with anyone recently doing a Bank of America safesend.

Do I have it correct?

Paternal Name - Use middle name on passport
Maternal Name - Last Name on Passport

If you're speaking of a Mexican passport, you could be wrong. The apellido materno is the last surname on a Mexican passport and the apellido paterno is the next to the last. Most Mexicans have two nombres (Christian names to use an old-fashioned term) and two apellidos (surnames), so there really is NOT a "middle" name. On the Mexican passport, the apellidos are one line and the nombres are the next line.

To illustrate what mazbook1 said:

Man's name: José Armando Serrano Padilla
His baptismal name is José Armando. His father's last name is Serrano. His mother's maiden name (which is her father's name) is Padilla--that's his 'second' last name.

Woman's name: Josefina Ana Gutiérrez Amores
Her baptismal name is Josefina Ana. Her father's last name is Gutiérrez. Her mother's maiden name (which is her father's name) is Amores.

Next step: José Armando Serrano Padilla marries Josefina Ana Gutiérrez Amores.
His name remains the same. So does hers, but after marriage, she is known to society as Josefina Ana Gutierrez de Serrano. This is not her legal name, merely a society convention showing that she is his.

José Armando Serrano and Josefina Ana Gutiérrez have four children. Their names follow the first two rules:
Son--José Alberto Serrano Gutiérrez (their father's last name and their mother's father's last name)
Daughter--Alicia Victoria Serrano Gutiérrez (ditto)
Daughter--Ximena Marcela Serrano Gutiérrez (ditto)
Son--Filiberto Ramòn Serrano Gutiérrez (ditto)

Next step: After 58 years of happy marriage, José Armando Serrano Padilla dies. Josefina Ana Gutiérrez Amores is known now as Josefina Ana Gutiérrez viuda de Serrano--widow of Serrano.

Easy peasy.

How would this apply to a person sending a SafeSend to a non-Mexican in Mexico? For example, John Wayne Smith.

Wouldn't you send it to the person in the way his identification shows his name? If his name is John Wayne Smith and his IDs read John Wayne Smith then you send it in that name.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear in my first post, I do know how to do it for a Mexican.
I wanted to clarify how to do it for an American whose name does not follow the maternal, paternal pattern. I am setting up it for myself, but I am not yet in Mexico to try it and pick a transfer up.

No, I understood your original post. It remains a mystery on how to plug in NOB name into requests for Mexican forms.

So, the person picking it up will be you?

The name has to be identical to the name on the official ID (e.g. passport) you’ll be presenting when you claim the money. This I’m 100% sure of (voice of experience).

If you don’t have official ID that includes an apellido materno (maternal surname), my guess would be that you should leave it blank. (And fill in your surname for the apellido paterno.) This I’m not sure of, just speculating.

I have no experience with SafeSend, but your name should probably be as shown on your US passport, which they're likely to require as ID when you collect the money. If you do it the way you suggested in the original post, it won't match, because the fields on the passport are translated to French and Spanish:

Surname/Nom/Apellidos
DOE
Given Names/Prénoms/Nombres
JANE ANNE

In other words, if your passport shows only your last name in the "Surname/Nom/Apellidos" field, you should leave "maternal name" blank on the form.

Simple. Nombre is "JOHN WAYNE" Apellido Paterno is "SMITH". Apellido Matero is left blank.

You're absolutely right. For a gringo with only one surname, it goes in the apellido paterno position and the apellido materno is left blank. That's even the way my Mexican citizenship papers, my Mexican passport and my Mexican voter's ID card is.
