Headed NOB

Can't Post | Private Reply
We are driving to TX through Laredo or Columbia where we entered bring our vehicle and trailer on my fm3. When we go back for a couple of months before returning permanently we don't plan to take the trailer. Yes ideally we are supposed to, but I am wondering if anyone has crossed NOB leaving their trailer behind?
Thanks in advance.

It's not so much a matter of "ideally", but necessary. Without turning in the trailer you can't ever turn in your car sticker because the two are connected. Now, you may never expect to leave, but I'm sure you can imagine several scenarios why you might need to turn in the sticker, bring in another car, sell the current one etc. Just turn in the sticker, get a new one when you come back in and pay the deposit - oh, you don't ever expect to leave MX again, well, then just consider the "deposit" as a "gift to MX" as I'm sure it was designed to be.

While I agree (technically) with Steve, I would add this thought....

The intent of the law is that you have your car/trailer permitted while in Mexico and keep them there legally by keeping your FM3 valid and notifying Aduana of such when renewing annually. It sounds like this is your intent.

Plenty of people in your circumstance drive across the border and never stop at the border to turn in their permit, and then again when crossing back into Mexico. That is a choice you have understanding the potential mishaps, however unlikely, that could occur with that plan.

So the way I understand the responses, it is possible to take the vehicle out of Mexico without the trailer however the consequences would be the loss of the sticker deposit, and that another vehicle could not be imported on the sticker holder's visa. If this is correct, then would it be possible to return to Mexico with the same vehicle/sticker and take the trailer out in order to clear the sticker and get the refund at some later date?

My reply was that the OP 'could' drive the car-only out of Mexico without stopping at all.... then drive back in not stopping again. This action would not cause a forfeit of the deposit because no one knows the vehicle is not still in Mexico. I know that plenty people do this (sans the trailer issue) because they don't want the hassle of that process when their intention is to come right back in. This seems to address the OP's desire.

Take the case of a person with a US plated car, living in the Mexican border and working every day in the US. Do any of us think that this person stops twice every day both coming and going. I don't think so.

So my answer to you on your 'would it be possible' question is 'Yes'. Be aware that this is not according to Mexican laws or regulations so if you are a stickler for doing everything perfectly as prescribed then you'll have to make that decision. Also be aware that something could happen to that car while you were back in the US (wreck) that would preclude one from driving it back. At a minimum that would cause the driver to have some issues to face with Mexico. If is my belief, however, that the letter of the law is meant, among other things, to keep people from bringing in US plated vehicles and later selling them in Mexico.

The OP could also get a multiple exit/re-entry permit (letter), permitting her to leave without the trailer and re-enter Mexico later - all legally. Yucalandia: : Importing & Driving a Car in Mexico[/size][/black]

So I wonder, as in the OP's case, that if a trailer is 'attached' to one's TIP can one use the Partial Return with car only....

A friend entered Mexico with their pick-up truck and trailer registered together under an FM3. They used the Retorno Parcial program (stopping at Banjercito), and left the trailer in Mexico for about 6 months, while returning to the States. They returned to Mexico 6 months later, and then left with both truck and trailer. They returned to Mexico with both truck and trailer yet another time. No hassles - crossing at Laredo each time.
