Getting birth certificate translated for Mexico

I found this forum on google. You guys have a nice community here.
Well I have a situation that I need some help with.

I run a translation agency in Los Angeles, CA. I have a client who has a birth certificate in the Farsi language, and he is moving to Mexico, so he needs his birth certificate translated to Spanish. He will be submitting this to the county recorder's office to get it apostilled.

After searching for a long time, we found a translator that does both these languages, Farsi and Spanish. So we did the translation, and signed a translation certification of accuracy, with notarized signature. Client submitted this to the county recorder's office, and it got rejected because the translator was not certified.

The county recorder's office has asked him to get his birth certificate translated by an ATA/court certified interpreter/translator. However, here is the problem: there are no certified translators that do this language combination.

I am wondering if you could help me. What are we supposed to do in this situation?

Can we translate from Farsi to English, and ask the client to get the apostille , and then once they move to Mexico, they can translate the English to Spanish by a translation company there?

Yes, if it even needs to be translated into Spanish. An English language birth certificate with an apostille is often accepted without translation.

On the few occasions that I have needed to provide a birth certificate, to get my first visa, etc. I have never needed to have it translated from English to Spanish, nor have it apostilled.


It should be remembered that the Gerente (general manager) of any government agency here may legally ignore, delete, change, or add his own requirements to any Federal law. You cannot know what may be required until you visit or get in touch with the local INM office where you will live. One size does not fit all. The same goes for motor vehicle registrations, and drivers licenses. It is different in every state.

When I applied for my FM3 a few years ago, along with other documents, I gave my lawyer my US birth certificate, apostilled but not translated. He returned it to me saying he wouldn't need it. Since then I have never needed to show my birth certificate to transact any official trámite though I'm aware that doesn't mean that I will never need it in the future.

Call the Embassy of your client´s country of origin in Mexico City and ask them for a certified translator from Farsi to Spanish, they would know.

I do not know where you client is from but neither Iran nor Afghanistan are part of the Hague Convention so there is no such a thing as apostille for those countries. Google the list of members. Canada is not part of it either so Canadians do not have to have their documents apostilled.
