Re post by Neil (hi, Neil): One thing missing from these posts re chile seeds is that many varieties are very sensitive to climatic, weather, and soil conditions and simply will not produce the same result should the desired/optimal conditions not exist. I come from a southern New Mexico (Mesilla, Las Cruces) family who migrated to California (we NEVER ate Calif. chile, only NM chile) in the 1930s. My grandfather and two uncles were quite adept at farming and neither they, or anyone they knew, were ever able to get the famous NM chile varieties to produce flavorful "fruit" in southern California - that still holds true. New Mexico State University has developed and evolved many varieties of NM chile, thanks to the pioneering efforts of a founding Japanese-American professor and agriculturist many decades ago. That said, there ARE many varieties of chiles that are less sensitive and more robust that will do well under a variety of conditions.
