breakdown

Our 2002 gmc diesel truck broke down in Melaque on Feb. 20 and it looks like it cannot be repaired. Our temporary import permit expires mid July, but we would like to take the truck out of the country at a later date (i.e. next winter), as we need to get home. Is this possible? Is it possible to get an extension? I've also been told that once your permit has expired, it is possible to get a 5 day permit at a later date in order to get the truck out and have the permit canceled. Is this possible? I realize that our deposit would be lost. Do I need to contact the Aduana about our situation? Are there any other solutions? Thanks for any advice.

Get an FM3 in the name of the person on the import sticker. The truck is legal as long as the FM3 is legal and that's for at least a year.

I am assuming that you are in the country on an FMM visa, right?

To my knowledge there is no extension possible with a temporary import permit (TIP) in any other way than the owner getting an FM3 (old name) prior to the expiration of the FMM. Also technically when one leaves the country one must turn in their FMM and when this is done the truck will then be in the country illegally.

I have never heard of a delayed 5-day permit as this would 'violate' the terms of the original temporary permit which states that you will remove the vehicle by the time the FMM expires.

Under your situation, yes, I would contact an Aduana office and see what options you may have due to the breakdown of the vehicle. But since you have until July (if you don't leave the country) to get it out anyway, I'm not sure what luck you'll have.

Good luck!

Rick, the OP is correct. Aduana has a program called “Retorno Seguro” (Safe Return) that allows permit expired vehicles to be driven out of the country.
Here is a Google translation of the program.
The Spanish original is here.

Google link repaired.

Roley, thanks for making me aware of this program. I have an acquaintance in SMA whose car permit is expired and I thought she was surely going to pay some fines to get it out!

Ask on the Tom Zap board if there is still a lock-up parking lot, with any room.

It was on the West Side Melaque.

Thanks for your info. Our mechanic said he would store our truck until our return, but I will also check out your source.

The usual 'vehicle killer' is the transmission, especially automatics, but Don Pedro is right, my transmission mechanic swaps out transmissions all the time. There is a big, used transmission scrapyard/specialist in Guadalajara, the mechanic goes up there and eyeballs a fit, draws up an adaptor plate and other adjustments. He says he has done this hundreds of times.
