Traveling from Santa Teresa to Acapulco...safe places to stay?

Hi, I'm new to this forum. We are moving to a small town south of Acapulco in about 6 weeks. We're crossing at Santa Teresa NM, close to El Paso/Juarez, going thru Durango, Zacatecas...
Can anyone give me some advice on safe places to stay overnite that will also take our dog (black lab). Altho I used "punto a punto" for driving directions I think we will only make Durango from the border. So it's going to take 2 or 3 nites. We know the way once we hit Acapulco, but getting that far is a long drive...thank you in advance for any input!

We have made the crossing at Santa Teresa far more times than I care to count. Before I get into suggestions and ideas, there is one aspect to your plans that I need clarification on. That would be your indicated intent to go to Durango? Normally the drive through Santa Teresa to Zacatecas doesn't require driving through Durango. Is there a particular reason for going through there?

Hi thanx for your reply! The only reason I have listed Durango and Zacatecas is that was how the states were listed on "punto a punto". We just want to get to Acapulco the fastest- and safest route. (actually our town is Playa Ventura, about 2 hours south of Acapulco, closet town on the map is Copala. Your suggestions are gratefully invited (make sense? ha ha).
