Please advise, orthopedist or neurologist recommendation for breastfeeding mother

Hi fellow expats. Figured this was a long shot but have no where else to turn.

I have extreme sciatic nerve pain and may have reinjured something in my lower back on Sat, havent been able to walk well since then. An ortho in the family back home told me to go on strict bedrest for 5 days and take ibuprofen for the pain and swelling. It hasnt helped so far, and I am very frustrated as the two doctors we have here with here (on a general MD and other an ortho) told me I had to stop breastfeeding for treatment. This is a very outdated (and grossly incorrect) belief, and Im searching for a doctor more up on the times who can help me.

If you have any recommendations on any doctor who I could go see soon (hoping to go see someone tomorrow) I would really appreciate it. So would my two daughters, 2.5 and 1 yrs old, who are now having to deal with a lame mommy who cant play with them!

In 1997, I was treated by Dr. Jaime Laventman Grimberg. He received his advanced training in Neurology in the USA at John Hopkins and interned in Neurology at the Mayo Clinic. He is associated with both the American British Cowdray Hospital (Hospital ABC) at both its Sante Fe and Observatorio locations and Hospital Angeles.

He speaks English as well as Hebrew. I highly recommend him.

He is highly respected among his peers and would be able to refer you to another Dr./specialist if he is not available.

THANK YOU! I have an appointment for tomorrow morning, I like him already. His english was perfect, seemed very knowledgable and when I mentioned I am breastfeeding and can/will not stop he said it was no problem and we can explore non- medicinal treatment.

I cant even express how much you have saved me. I have encountered a lot of anti-breastfeeding doctors in our short time here, how refreshing to find someone who finally ISNT going to tell me to give my baby te de manzanilla inst of breastmilk (eyes rolling here) .

I am not sure where his office is now. He used to be located in Lomas de Chapultepec on Avenida de Las Palmas.

You could try reaching him at the number listed in the Hospital ABC directory at 5246-9791. You could also try the number listed at Hospital Angeles at 5246-9790.

I was very impressed today with Dr. Laventman Grimberg. I would highly recommend him to anyone else needing to see a neurologist - or anyone needing a recommendation for another type of specialist.

When I called in to make the appointment, I asked to speak to him first - and he spent almost 20 minutes on the phone with me before I ever became his patient. That has never happened in the States! (to me at least)

I was pleased with the appointment and although we didnt see eye to eye on the breastfeeding issue, he did respect my decision to continue breastfeeding and helped me work around it.

He even sent to doctor who must still be an intern (she watched our exam and sat in on the consultation) down to the radiologist/MRI area with me - she also spoke English (although not as well as Dr Lavetman) to make me feel more comfortable. They were the only two we encountered at Hospital Angeles who spoke English, but we were only in their office, the cafeteria , and the radiologist area. The nurses administering the MRI were very kind and worked with me and my childish Spanish skills.
