Sooooo many questions....

Can't Post |
Hola!

¡Yo estoy yendo a Mexico muy pronto, permanente, ojala! And I have many, many questions. Hopefully you can't or won't set up an rule to delete postings from me immediately as they may become incessant!

1) What is the scoop on moving belongings to Mexico? I don't have alot, but what I have is nice, not that I couldn't find as good of stuff in Mexico, I just already paid for this stuff. I have several computers, which I would like to use to provide a modicum of income through various means. They are all used but most less than one year old and all but one are custom (I built them). I have all the original boxes and I can clean them up so they look like new. What is it going to cost to get them there (legal or otherwise, joke!)? I also have several pieces of network gear (Cisco stuff) that I don't have original boxes for.

2) To FM2 or not to FM3, vice versa and all other possible permutations. (After all, I'm a computer geek and we talk like that amongst ourselves). Short of going to the consulate and spending mucho tiempo en los edificios del gobierno to find out that their going to deport me to Vanuatu (which would work also), can someone give me a bulleted list of pros and cons?

3) Owning land in Los Estados Unidos De Mexico como un Mexicano, pero en realidad soy un pinche gringo (y muy blanco también). An opportunity is available to purchase land in Michoacan. It is not in the costal zone, but in view of the coast (>100 meters). There are no other structures (government or otherwise) in the area and the only road is a long dead end that goes nowhere else. I am soltero and have no inherent aversion to marriage, just never met the woman that would put up with my s**t for a lifetime.

4) I want a puppy to hug and squeeze and drool all over and s**t on my brand new carpet and bark and whine and piss of the neighbors. I have been around dogs most of my life (I'm allergic to cats and racoons) and enjoy their companionship (I've trained guide dogs). I plan on getting a canine of some sort in the next month or 2 so we can make the road trip together and bond. "You never know if you're compatible until you travel together" or "Travelling companions are often found dead on the side of the road." (paraphrased from "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy")

5) Are you still reading this?

Thanks for your indulgence,

El Papa

Are you sure ? Maybe I am interpreting the questions incorrectly, it seems as though you are expecting us to provide you with a PowerPoint presentation on how to manage your move to Mexico.

While it is true that I am rated only for visual flight rules, I eschew PowerPoint Presentations (and most other high quality Microsoft products, oh wait, there are none). I search for answers to questions from previously wizened and sage predecessors. Hopefully not predecessors previously seasoned in a variety of psychotropics.

Your'e funny! In all seriousness you have come to the site that has all of the answers to your questions archived.I am assuming that this site's search engine is working. In a nutshell:
1) bringing a computer in pieces seem to be a viable workaround for the 'no desktop PC' rule, some here have done it. I understand that such elaborate measures are unneccessary when bringing in household goods with the Menaje de Casa and FM3.
2) Doggies need their vaccination papers for re-entry to the US. If you pick up a stray along the way and fall in love with her then you may have trouble bringing her back to the US, lots of guys going to Cancun on spring break have that problem. But you said you are only going One Way (one guey?)so it doesn't matter.

If I missed something or got it just plain wrong the others will chime in and fix it.

Alex, it is extremely easy to take a dog back to the US. Be it plane or car there is nothing to it.

A health certificate from the local vet will probably be asked for at the airport, even though it is not required for entry into the US.

Basically all the US wants to see is that the animal, be it cat or dog, has a current up to date rabies shot.

Horses and cows and burrows are a whole other ballgame.

The shelter I work at helps people get dogs and cats to the US and beyond every snowbird season.

And if anyone needs help getting a dog into or out of Mexico just let me know. I would be glad to help.

I have perused this forum for a couple months (maybe longer, hard to tell with time dilation or dilated pupils?) and have seen postings concerning some, if not all, of the above questions. However, there are many threads and even more people pulling on those threads. Some inevitably unraveling; not to mention substantial conflicts in their recommendations/facts. One thing that you mentioned is bringing the computer(s) in pieces. Is this a feasible option and do you have any estimate of a success rate. You also mention the Menaje de Casa (List of Household Goods). Can you put computers on that and where can I get a list of approved/applicable items? Is there a dollar/peso limit for this? I have seen threads that say computers are 40-60% more in Mexico. If I sell these here (2GHz P4s), I'll lose money and have to spend more there anyway. Not that I really need them, it's just that I could use them to help earn dollars to turn into pesos as I'm not old enough, wealthy enough or studly enough (but I have no aversion to being a "kept man" if any ladies are interested) to retire yet. I mean I really don't need them, I could do without them, really, I could, honest, puede asegurar es verdad, WORD!

P.S. Maybe you can teach me how to put those really COOL graphics in my email!?

Hi,

1. You want an FM3 not FM2.

2. You can bring your computer and everything else with an FM3 and a menaje de case.

3. Click here to learn all about a menaje and the rest of what you need to know for your move (not a Power Point but close): http://rollybrook.com/...o_move_to_mexico.htm

Good luck

Just referred him to your site. You are the resident expert on the household goods.

Referred him to an article that Jennifer Rose wrote.

Also, tried to convince him to adopt from a shelter here :)

Anita's Animal Shelter of course :)

If he is REALLY El Papa, doesn't he have a staff of zillions who will work all this out for him in advance? And wasn't he here in August for a visit? I'm sure I saw him on TV... ;)

Yes I do have a really big staff, but what has that got to do with.... oh! never mind... I think my interpreter chose the wrong usage for the word there. Besides, I'm not getting any younger. You try to wear that funny hat all the time!

Sorry, LAPs only (Limitado Audiencia Personales). Can Esperanza say that? Someone told me that was a bad thing. They also told me that "gringo" meant good looking and "pinche gringo" meant really good looking; and, depending on how much emphasis was put on the words, whether they really meant it.

As for los perros, I am investigating the purchase of 6.5 acres in the mountains of Michoacan. I would love to have a small pack of tame animals. I am, as mentioned earlier, allergic to cats and racoons. My variety preference is medium-sized, working-type, intelligent and obedient-enough-to-be-trained dogs. Sit, stay, lay, heel and walking on a leash are the only things I think a dog needs to be able to do, anything else is a result of the animal's natural tendencies. I have had several different types mixed with Labs in the past and they were all muy simpaticos. I am also open to recommendations. Negative features would be long hair, bad temperment, excessive activity (Airedales, Vizlas, Weimaraners, etc.)

My timeframe has not been cemented, but I will know with a high degree of certainty in the next 2 weeks. My tentative plans are to be in Mexico from January-February/March to answer questions and fill out forms that may be required. This also fits well with what Rolly has on his page concerning the governmental timeframes. This also gives me a chance to prepare the Mexican citizenry for my permanent arrival in January 2004 at the latest.
