Buying a new car in Mexico

We are considering buying a new car locally (in Vallarta). So we'd like to hear the experiences of anyone who has done that. We are interested in a new, not used, car. Any advice on price negotiations, best time of year to buy, any recommendations of good or less-than-good dealerships, any other hints would all be appreciated. I'm sure much advice from other areas such as negotiation on price would apply here as well.
Also, if we buy a new car elsewhere in Mexico,such as Guadalajara or Tepic, is the warrantee still good here?
Thanks for any first-hand info!

Since we are a few years in on our FM2 equivilent, we are considering taking our Texas-plated car back to Texas and selling it and getting a Nayarit plated car.

I bought a new car in Guadalajara in 2005. It was easy, once I found a dealership that could get me the car I wanted. The scoop at the excellent dealer where I bought:

No dickering on price--it was sticker-price all the way
Warranty is good everywhere in Mexico, no matter where in the República you purchase the car
I bought at ROCA (Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge) in Guadalajara. Their service, pre-and-post sale, was superb. The saleswoman actually had the car prepped and delivered it to my door, and arrived carrying a bouquet of thank-you flowers for me.

Having said that, if you buy a car in Jalisco, you have to register the car in Jalisco and buy Jalisco plates. Then you have to take the car to Nayarit and un-register the car in Jalisco, send back the Jalisco plates, and re-do everything in Nayarit. Seems smarter (and certainly less costly) to buy in Nayarit.

esperanza, FYI, Puerto Vallarta IS in Jalisco, only Nuevo Vallarta is in Nayarit. The world's longest bridge (or shortest one) connects them. Going from Nuevo Vallarta to Puerto Vallarta, you arrive an hour later than when you entered the bridge. Going the other direction, you arrive in Nuevo Vallarta an hour before you entered the bridge. VERY strange! LOL

I would bet that the transitos on BOTH sides don't pay much attention to whether you have Jalisco or Nayarit plates on your car.

Mazbook, it's no longer the world's longest bridge. Our municiplaity, Bahia de Banderas, Nayarit, is the only Nayarit municipality using Central time, as of 2 years ago.
Out of curiosity, if they require I register the car in Jalisco (I live in Bucerias, Nayarit) what address are they going to use on the paperwork?
I need to pursue that further with the Vallarta dealerships, as I am sure they sell plenty of cars to Nayarit people.

I think it doesn't matter where your car's plates come from. I bought a new car in Guad in 2006. It was a simple process and I was able to negotiate on price.

I would ask a dealer in Jalisco if I could get the car plated in another state. They have had this situation before.

Bought a car in Colima in August. Toyota dealership couldn't have made it easier. They even drove my car to Jalisco where I live so I could get local plates and not have to pay the tenencia.

I wonder if the difference in price between buying a car in the US offsets what the costs are for the same vehicle purchased in Mexico?

You do not pay the tenencia in Jalisco but you do in Nayarit.

My husband has a truck, we need a car.
Need being a relative thing, of course we don't need it, but we would like to have a car as well as a truck.

Many car makers have plants in Mexico. Much of what is made here is for export. Look around and see what's popular then check the prices at a dealer or on the web. All the brands have websites and show the prices.

Sioux, we haven´t bought a Mexican car as of yet, but we have been servicing our 95 Pathfinder at Sierra Nissan in Vallarta since 2001 and we really like their service department. We love our old Pathfinder

Friends of ours have a Mexican Platina (Nissan) bought at Sierra Nissan and have been very satisfied with quality and service. Also, as you have probably noticed, there appears to be a Nissan dealership being built on Highway 200 which would be very handy to Bucerias.

Based on our experience with our Kentucky built Toyota Camry, I personally would never want a nice low-to-the-ground sedan for Mexico, even one built in Mexico, because I don´t like worrying about chewed up roads, giant unfair topes, etc. Our Camry basically stays in estacionamiento unless we are travelling on the Highway, but it´s great for that. Very comfortable for driving to Guadalajara or the border.

In Nov. we bought a new car here and wanted a Nissan. They let us in on a no dicker deal [ good price] with a new 2011 [don´t asked me how they had a new 2011 car left, I have no idea] and a slightly used 2010 at a good price but would not dicker on the set price of a 2013. There are a lot of Nissans here. All the Nissan dealers we went to here quoted the exact same price for the 2013 model we were considering and wouldn´t dicker a peso.

One of my wife´s coworkers knew a saleman at Volkswagen and took us there before we bought. The salesman was willing to bargain with us. In the end it seemed to be who you know, not how much you are willing to spend or how tough we negotiated here. We got a $13,000 pesos discount and they ordered the car of our choice. Also free Volkswagen floor mats. LOL

I may be forced by the Mexican Government into buying a Mexican car, (which is just what I always wanted).

I am not really interested in how easy it is to buy, or if your can "dicker" on the price, or who in what state covers the warranty, or the disadvantages of lower suspension, ... etc.

What I need to know is:

1. What is tenencia ?
2. Does the state of Guanajuato have tenencia ?
3. If the state of Guanajuato has tenencia, how long does it last, and at what rates ?
3. What does a quality insurance policy run on a new car on average, including, colision, comprehensive, theft, vandalism, etc. with a deductible no more than MN$6375 (US$500) ?
4. What are the average annual costs of all license plate and registration fees on the average ?
5. Is there a 16% VAT tagged on to the price of a new car ?
6. What other fees, government expenses, dealer fees, or any other fee or expense do I need to know about ?

In other words I need to know how much further I will be ripped off, besides having to take my US vehicle to the border and sell it and loose US$5000 on it, and having to pay the price of the trip costing US$1000-$2500. Besides this loss of US$6000-$7500, I need to try to calculate what the additional annual cost of Mexican ownership is over US vehicle ownership.
