MEXICO CITY (AP) — A strong, long 7.9 earthquake with an epicenter in Guerrero state shook central southern Mexico on Tuesday, swaying buildings in Mexico City and sending frightened workers and residents into the streets.

It appears to be virtually on the border between Oaxaca and Guerrero:

To me, the only question is: Did you feel it? If so, how strong did you feel it?

Nothing here in Queretaro state but then again, we don't get earthquakes in my area.

I sure felt it in Mexico City! Buildings swayed and people ran out into the street, but no damage in my building. It was definitely scary!

Having been through thousands of temblors of varying intensities over the past year-and-a-half I can confirm that it isn't something that is easy to ignore. After a big one like the one you have just had, you are likely to get quite a few aftershocks.

My advice - have drinking water, a collection of canned food, a torch (flashlight), and maybe a few bottles of courage (booze) on hand. The water is very important. After the 22 February 2011 quake here in New Zealand we had to scrounge around for water for several days. Fortunately there was a municipal pump house a couple of blocks from our place and we were able to fill up buckets from the water streaming from the busted pipes.
Así pues...aquí estamos...

I live in Colonia La Condesa, Mexico City. Go over to the Mexico City forum and have a look at what we experienced. This 7.9, more than two minute long earthquake was a big deal in terms of the fear factor, but fortunately there was apparently no loss of life.

Yes, thank goodness, the damages appear to be relatively minor.

I felt it for about 20 seconds here in Cuernavaca. I was busy writing something forgettable on my laptop when my suegra called my attention to the slightly shaking house. We are only about 55 miles from México City here.

I was born and raised in northern California, the second most seismically active state, then spent the second half of my life in Alaska, the most seismically active state in The US, so earthquakes don't get much attention from me.

The length of a quake does concern me. The longer a quake lasts, the more likely it is to cause considerable damage. My suegra lost her house in the 1985 México City quake.

About 20 minutes later, my suegra's son, my cuñado, called us from Tacoma to find out if we felt it here. Thank God for Vonage, he had just heard about that quake on the news up there. The loss of their house in 1985 is still fresh in his memory too.

Goldie and Tuffy. our dual organic seismic alarm system, didn't even get up off of their rugs, so it was minor here. You never know when a bad one will occur though, so I usually pay attention for the first few seconds.

I was eating in the Italian Coffee Company in San Andres Tuxtla about nine km from Catemaco when the room started swaying around. I grasped the table thinking I was dizzy as I am recovering from a burst appendix and two surgeries to save my life. Then I saw the hanging lights swaying and realized it was an earthquake. About this time the girls behind the counter screamed and ran out the front door leaving me to finish my sandwich and watch the cash register. I thought it went on for a long time also. After spending 15 years in Ca bay area I have experienced many earthquakes. This one was not very deep and that may have something to do with it. Catemaco never felt anything.

I live on the third floor of a small building on a narrow street, so when large trucks come through, the building often shakes a little. I've gotten so used to this that when I feel things moving, I look up at the hanging lamps in my living room. If they're just moving a tiny bit, I stay put. If they're swaying like crazy (and if I feel nauseous and dizzy), then I know it's a quake of some size and I leave rather quickly!

This one did go one for a long time, up to 2 minutes in Mexico City according to reports I read in the newspaper, though where I live, it didn't seem that long. I also read it was not very deep, which explains the swaying buildings and swinging ceiling lights!
