Hunger kills more people than Narcos in Mexico, the second most obese country in the world

I don't question that malnutrition is a more serious public health problem than naroc-violence, nor that obesity is also a public health concern, but I DO wonder whether the standards for obesity -- the Body-Mass Index which there is evidence does not take into account non-European body types -- doesn't skew the results when dealing with populations with large non-Euopean genetic roots. Not that one can't be obese AND malnourished, of course.

There are simple answers Pete, It always amazes me, how many people have kept themselves in ignorance that whipped cream, cake frosting, and sugar and cream in coffee kill calories and neutralize Cholesterol. Before I quit drinking, dry gin Martinis used to do the same thing. At least I always believed that they did :)

I think this is a very good point. Recently, I read an article about this very topic and their conclusion was the same -BMI is a system desgined to calculate those of European heritage.

From personal experience, I actually dont see that many obese people here in Mexico City. And searching for my husbands pant size has been nearly impossible. And I wont mention bra shopping here in the land of "nothing bigger than a B" .

But yes, very unhealthy eating habits indeed. Yesterday I saw a 1.5 year old drink pepsi, eat camdy , then have cake all in an hour. Yikes.

The problems with the BMI (Body Mass Index) are well documented, which is why an alternative has been proposed which is receiving widespread attention:
http://www.thesciworld.com/2011/03/a-new-obesity-scale-claiming-to-be-better-than-bmi-proposed/

The Body Adiposity index (API) involves equally simple measurements and is equally easy to calculate.
