Health Certificates for Pets

Entering MX on a tourist visa we had understood that a health certificate (less than 15 days old) was required for bringing any domestic pets across the border. We took our cats to our vet and brought the certificate with us. The issue did not arise at the border and we did not show the document.

Returning to the U.S. in May, we will be crossing at Nogales and would like to know what if any documents may be required by U.S. Customs and Immigration to bring the same animals back with us.

Thanks.

From our experience both driving and flying, all that was required was a rabies certificate and your letter from your vet.

Most vets have the form you need and may simply sign you off as OK for a few pesos

Our experience form driving is totally absent. We have never been asked for any papers for our dog.

I also have traveled with up to three large labs and a cat at one time. All are wearing their collars with the Rabies tag and have never been asked for their papers coming or going in either direction. Only once was asked for one's name. This has been my experience crossing at Matamoros / Brownsville as well as in both directions of the Anzalduas Bridge, Laredo (South Bound only), and Colombia # 2 many times over three years.

Thank you all. Your responses are reassuring.

I did Google the question also and found that as long as the animals appear healthy it is unlikely that anything further will be required. If they appear unhealthy, a vet exam - at your expense - could be required.

Again, thanks.
